How likely is it that an Evinrude 1/2 HP Mate (’39-’41) late production would have a model number 4264 like a 1/2 HP Cub (also ’39-’41) instead of 4263 for the Mate as shown in most model ID information? I’m looking at a Mate that appears original but has 4264-xxxxx on the model and serial number plate. Thanks from a new member.
December 18, 2016 at 6:08 pm #49368Parts get switched around over the years and there is that possibility with the motor you are looking at. Although the same inside, the 4263 Evinrude Mate was a bit more stylish than its cousin, the 4264 Elto Cub. The Mate had side covers while the Cub was open with an exposed fuel tank, similar to the Pal.
December 18, 2016 at 11:54 pm #49382Thanks for your reply. Can anyone tell what year this might be between 1939 and 1941? It’s serial number o5xxxx.
December 19, 2016 at 4:13 am #49404The Elto Cub cost $29.50 in 1941, the Evinrude Mate was $34.50. More Cubs were sold plus some Mate owners lost covers. This made Cubs more common and Mates more valuable. Many collectors put Mate covers on Cubs to increase there value. No Mate or Cub production numbers survived World War Two. The parts books just grouped them together. All three years books are exactly the same. . . 🙄
December 19, 2016 at 5:48 am #49406Evinrude Mate serial numbers for 1939 are 4263-00001 to 4263-03474.
1940 are 4263-03475 to 4263-04055
1941 are 4263-04056 and up.
Elto Cub serial numbers for 1939 are 4264-00001 to 4264-04062
1940 are 4264-04063 to 4264-05164
1941 are 4264-05165 and up.
That info is found in Evinrude-Elto Service Bulletin Number 28 dated April 1, 1949 which gives Trade-in values for used motors.December 19, 2016 at 2:34 pm #49423Great information! Thanks for your quick reply.

December 23, 2016 at 8:12 pm #49650Can someone tell the correct Champion spark plug for the ’39 Evinrude Mate. I’ve looked and found conflicting information. Thanks, Jim

Hi
I found an old Champion J-4 in my Evinrude model "MATE"
looks original ( I hope )
😎
.December 23, 2016 at 10:40 pm #49655The 1939 Mate/Cub DID come with a J-4 Champion. That number was changed to J-12 which became J-12J then J-12C. They had problems with people stripping out the threads in the cylinder head, so 1940 & 1941 models had longer threads and used a Champion H-10J. . . 😀
