Hello everyone, cool to see so many people are still into the older outboards. I recently traded a guy for a 195something Gale/Buccaneer/Spiegal/Brooklure?! All I know is that my model number is 230-53-12D and Serial # is 551076. It was running great for a few minutes while I envisioned myself cruising Lake Huron until it seized out of nowhere. So anyway, I’m wondering where to find a piston, piston rod, and possibly crankshaft. I’ll attach pictures. If anyone knows where to get 60+ year old parts you guys. I appreciate any help. Thanks,

May 24, 2017 at 1:02 am #58225You have a 1954 Spiegel Brooklure, Gale model 12D11. And I can tell you what caused that damage. Water has somehow gotten into the crankcase and caused rusting of the crankshaft, under the rod. The rod is silver plated, and the silver is the bearing. When you started it up, the rust particles scraped and scratched away at the silver plating, which destroyed it. Then the resulting heat buildup melted the aluminum rod and that’s all she wrote. You see the results. Most people will be quick to blame it on the oil. It wasn’t the oil, it was the water.
I speak of authority because I’ve seen it many times. The water usually gets in through the lower main bearing seal, but your ’54 doesn’t have one and doesn’t need one. So, where did the water get in? My best guess is the exhaust cover gaskets or a pin hole through the baffle plate. You certainly need to inspect it.
Believe it or not, that melted aluminum can usually be sanded off the crank.

cheap as all the parts you will need.Prepare to be boarded!
May 24, 2017 at 1:46 am #58231I thought the same thing Frank, the lower unit oil was real milky too. I’ll check out if Seaway can help me out. I found a used powerhead in Cali for $145, its tempting. Are there other year make models that contain the same crankshaft/piston/piston rods? Thanks for all the help.
May 24, 2017 at 2:03 am #58232There were gale 12hp models with 2.25 inch bore and stroke from 1954 thru 1959 (gale models 12D11 thru 12D18), sold under the following brands: AMC Saber, Atlas Royal, Elto, Gale Buccaneer, Brooklure and Viking
I’m sure the experts will be able to say which years/models could donate a piston & rod, but likey: "lots"

May 24, 2017 at 4:53 am #58239The 1948, almost certainly NOT. Gale 12hp models made from 1949-1953 had a 2.375 inch bore and 2.25 inch stroke. The Montgomery Wards is a 1951 model, also a no-go.
And it looks like I forgot that M/W "Sea King" is another brand that Gale motors were sold under!
Maybe someone will pipe up with the parts you need, or at least the parts diagram… Post in the Classified section, see if there is a local meet soon (and pre-post what you’re looking for). $145 for a powerhead seems like a lot (to me anyway). But I enjoy the hunt for parts as much as anything!
I think the 12D10 parts manual referenced by wedgie is for the earlier powerhead.
