      Hello, hello…

Any magneto coil experts out there? I have a 1936 4146 Evinrude Elto Sportsman without a working coil. I’ve been searching for a replacement coil but unfortunately either the coils are hard to come by or are nonexistant now. I’ve contacted almost all the Antique Outboard Boat sites and members asking if they have a reliable coil available; nothing available. I really don’t know much about coils but I took a shot in the dark and tried using or converting the modern OMC coil 18-5181 to fit the top plate of the 4146. Unfortunately I didn’t get any spark.

If there are any coil experts or users knowledgeable about coils, would you be able to review the attached photos of the coil that I converted to fit on my 4146. Please let me know if you see any potential reasons why the conversion may not work. Much appreciated for any help or advise.

      Thanks,
      scott

Do you still have the lamination from the old coil? I would suggest removing the new coil from the new laminations and putting the new coil on the old lamination. The magnets in the flywheel are located 180 degrees apart as opposed to the newer flywheel that have the magnets closer together.

Here is a slide show of a early Johnson conversion
that shows what John C is talking about. You want
to put the new coil on the old laminations so the
magnets charge the coil in the correct spot.
Nice try though. You almost had it.

Thank you both for your replies and feedback!

My original attempt was to use the old laminations just like the video but after installing them on the new coil an putting everything in place, the flywheel didn’t fit without hitting the coil. The coil was too bulky. (bummer)

In a recent post for a request of a 1935 Sportsman coil, a user mentioned that a chainsaw coil may fit or could be converted to fit. I’ll try to locate a possible chainsaw coil next. If anyone is aware of the make/model of the coil, please let us know.

            Thanks again for any help!

Can you shave some off the top enough so it clears ? Looks like you already took some off, or is that just from the flywheel rubbing on it? That condenser working ok ?, and is it the right value for the coil ?

I had the 1935 Evinrude Elto Sportsman, and was trying to find an alternative Coil. I didn’t find a chainsaw coil that would fit it. But instead I got a new old stock Coil from: http://www.americanoutboard.com/decals/

@wedgie – The wear of the coil is s little of both. The flywheel was hitting the coil and rubbing it. I also shaved off a little to eliminate the rubbing. The condenser was the next thing that I was going to try to replace.
The ignition coil is for a Johnson Evinrude 1.5 – 40hp. An antique outboard motor supplier referred me to this coil for a possible conversion coil. I’m assuming this may be the right value.

@outboardboy3 – Thanks for the reference to a possible coil replacement. I’ll see if they have any available.
