Picked this motor up awhile back, model GG18736B. I see that there is a model GG18736A and not sure what the difference is between the two. I read on iboats that there were two models, gear shift and non-gear shift. Is this the difference between the two models?

Thanks
KirkAugust 21, 2017 at 4:31 pm #63587Gale used three different model #s in ’61 : 5D-18, -19, and -21. The SeaKings would probably correspond. The changes between them are minor, as far as I can tell without going over the common parts list in great detail. One of the changes involve a stern bracket, another reflects a different fuel pump assy. There’s no no-shift in the Gale line, it uses the standard CD- or Fisherman tower.

But it looks like the last direct drive 12hp was 1955 (12S10) with a wedge block. In 1956 both S & D 12hp seem to have the 10/15/18hp 5-bolt LU, and a removable cyl. head. Standard has the fuel tank on top, deluxe used an external tank…
I keep meaning to make a spreadsheet that shows all the Gale variations:
Lower units: non-360 direct, 360 direct, forward/neutral, gearshift
Blocks: wedge, non-wedge but no cyl head, cyl head.
Fuel tank: on top, fuel pump, both!August 21, 2017 at 11:23 pm #63614AnonymousAppreciate the replies.
Retiredoz, appreciate the comment about the Gale models. Looked at a parts list for both the Gale and Sea King variants but there was only 1 diagram for all the models. Sounds like the changes were minor. I’m not going to worry about it as my intent will be to check compression, spark and try to pass them on to a new home.
Phil, sounds like a significant undertaking. Good Luck

August 21, 2017 at 11:47 pm #63616In my Gale publication, there’s only one common parts list for all three models. The distinctions only appear in footnotes. And Phil : I stand by my statement. Perhaps you could stay on topic ?
November 5, 2024 at 6:30 pm #291908I have the 1951 non-shift Bucaneer 12hp. Its incredible they offered a direct drive 12hp! But then again, there was the ’49 Johnson 16hp with direct drive too!
November 5, 2024 at 9:10 pm #291916OK, I also poured over the parts lists and agree the differences are the stern brackets and clamp screws. (Clamp screw diameter, if memory serves correct).
Also, 5D18 & 5D19 had a cheapo fuel pump which was very troublesome. 5D21 corrected that with a good fuel pump. The good pump is a direct fit and replacement for the older one. -
