A friend just inherited the boat in the photo with a KD-15 Johnson on it.  Can anyone tell me the make of the boat?   It is painted on the bottom, so I’m also wondering if that is stock, of if it means someone fiberglassed over the bottom and then painted?  I’ve only seen the photos, so don’t have more to go on, and the boat is not located in my state.  The rig may come up for sale in the next few months.

      Thoughts on the manufacturer?
      thx,

Hello, this is my first post and I haven’t seen a search function so I have a couple of questions for cleaning this motor up. I don’t have a parts washer, but I would like to know what is the best way to clean up the cylinders without pulling it apart?  I do have the exhaust side off, so I can see the pistons. Also, on the bottom of the exhaust housing is a circle with 2 holes that cover/uncover a hole in the exhaust housing, what is this for?  Thank you and I hope to get a few pictures put up soon. Any help is appreciated.

          AOMCI Members…..

Ive picked up a 1948 Johnson KD15 (manufactured in Peterboro, Ontatio I think – with Metallic green paint) that looks to have lower hours at an estate sale.

Broke the motor down to asses the overall condition and noted one of the exhaust ports completely plugged.  Cleaned the entire exhaust system including some minor crud in the mid section where the top half meets the mid-section.  Pistons and cylinder walls looked great and overall condition of the motor is excellent.

Noted one coil is bad, points had mild corrosion and were cleaned, plug wires will need replacing, and so will the plugs.  One question on adjusting the points.  There are three 1/2 in holes on top of the flywheel for adjustments. However, when checking spark after cleaning and trying to set the points, I’ve noticed two of the holes line up perfect to set the gap, but its incorrect. The points open too early thus the gap is too far open giving no spark.  If I rotate the flywheel almost a half inch then try to set the gap visually at .020 via the third opening, I get a spark but its not set correct with out a gauge between the points (its too difficult to get my gauge in the hole to correctly set the points). What is the correct procedure for setting these points? Ive searched the forum and cant find anything. Nor can I find a manual.

In the carb, when dis-assembling, the rotating metering valve stem (called a barrel valve in the parts manual) was busted and came apart in my hand (its spring loaded).  Is their a fix for this or is this part available through a member?  Do I need to get a new carb assembly?  If so, any suggestions where?

Any feedback and advice to a fellow AOMCI member is appreciated!

          Rick

It will probably be hard to find a decently straight tank for a motor which has been in service for 80 plus years so you might have to break out the Bondo and elbow grease and settle for a painted one instead of polished. At least one member here has taken the time and effort to straighten and polish dented tanks and the finished results are incredible!

I do have a fairly decent KD-15 tank here but need it for a future project. Sorry. Here’s a 9.8 horse KA-37 tank which had lots of wounds on it so I ended up painting it with automotive base/clear.

I picked up a nice 1939 Johnson Seahorse 9.9 recently. I would like to get it looking really nice, and to that end, I am in search of a gas tank in good condition, or better. I understand that models K-80, KA-37, KA-38, KA-39, KA-10, KS-15, KD-15 all had the same tank.

A 1942 Johnson book states that the same tank fits models K-80, KA-37, KA-38, KA-39, KA-10, KS-15, KD-15.  They may or may not be identical (needs comparing) but they will fit and function.  Many Of these model motors are around so a tank should be most easily available.  Doing it yourself can be an interesting learning experience applicable to other tanks which are not common.  I did a K-65 tank once which came out very nice, good enough to polish.  I cut out a section on the inside face behind the flywheel big enough to access the dents and TIG welded it back together.  It takes lots of time and care though.

A KA-39 tank may be a painted tank, which would be easier since bondo and sanding can be used.

Does anyone have a parts and possibly a service manual for a Johnson KD-15, Serial# 629986?  A pdf version would be great.  Thanks in advance for the assistance.
