Topic: 1941 Johnson KS-15 carb kit
Hello, anyone know if it’s still possible to get a carb kit somewhere for my 41 Johnson seahorse KS-15 ?
Thank you
It has new rings now, but I never had it running before the new rings.
Compression 98 & 95 psi, which is about the same as my KS-15
that starts easy.Went through the magneto, did a coil swap for one cylinder, new capacitors.
New sparkplugs showing nice blue spark.Carb throttle spool / valve may be a little sloppy, but maybe that’s
just the way they’re made. I tried swapping carbs with the KS-15,
but they’re different, and won’t swap.I switched magnetos with the running KS-15, and it acts the same,
like it’s only “hitting” every once in a while. I tried enriching both
high and low speed needles, which didn’t seem to help. When I choke
it, it seems to be getting excess fuel and will quit firing. Before swapping magnetos, I removed the carb and poured some two
cycle oil on the center crank, turning the motor over, with the motor “horizontal”
so both sealing rings should have been good and sealed. If it’s the crankshaft sealing rings, I’m guessing I’m “out of business”…..
I have no other good ideas!P.S. – While the motor was apart, I checked, and rodded out the exhaust passage
in the lower leg, and it seemed okay.VIDEO of Failed starting attempts with know good magneto

Topic: 1941 Johnson KS-15 coil swap
I never got and sage advice on my last query regarding this
coil swap, so thought I’d just forge ahead, and “wing it”.The original K coil lamination would almost fit an OMC coil
with little effort, but, there’s no good way to orient the coil
where there wouldn’t be clearance issues with the flywheel,
or other.I have a couple of Tecumseh small engine coils I purchased
in the past for a possibility on a different magneto coil swap,
which didn’t work out, but “maybe” will on this one.In this orientation, the flywheel hub would likely rub.
This orientation looks “doable”. I checked the height,
and it looks like there would be enough clearance so
that the flywheel would not rub.
I started machining down the width of the lamination
to fit, but I still have to remove some laminations
on the height so the coil will slide on.The only “issue” that may dampen my hopes and dreams,
is that the plug wire on this Tecumseh coil is too short,
and it seems to be “glued in” place. Hopefully the
coil is still useable after I get the plug wire out.Plan “C”, would be a Military surplus Bendix Scintilla
coil, which would fit fine, but I dread removing those
coil laminates.Prepare to be boarded!
Topic: 1941 KS 15 Johnson, 9.3 hp
Bought this one several years ago, but it had one dead
coil, and I ended up borrowing the fuel line and fitting
for another project. After putting the 1937 KA-37 project into the “Hall of Shame”
for the Maytag piston ring fiasco, I decided to work on the
KS-15, seeing how K’s were fresh on my mine. The compression is around 100 and 88 on the other cylinder,
but it appears the one ring on the piston skirt is partially stuck.
I blasted it with PB Blaster, and decided to see if I could get it
to “fire off”, using the finished magneto from the KA-37.
The spark plugs on the KA-37 come out of the side of the
cylinder, the KA-15’s come out of the rear, so the plug wires
on my newer refreshed KA-37 mag are on the “short side”.
If I get this motor running, I’ll either need to find another K
coil, or try some kind of coil swap.Perhaps BP-Blaster does not burn too good. I squirted some
mixed gas in the plug holes and pulled it over. The only time
I know that it fired was when I had the plug wires crossed and
it about jerked the rope out of my hands.
Decide to fix up the rest of the fuel system before trying to start
it again. The inside of the gas tank was nasty with old gas and had a couple
of pin holes started in one spot. I cleaned the tank and JB Welded
the pin holes, and started making a new set of fittings to make up
a new fuel line. The “Nut” for the fuel line finished today…… only took four hours, lol.
Tomorrow, the brass piece gets made, that the fuel line solders into.Prepare to be boarded!
Anyone try an OMC Universal Coil swap on these K series motors?
It looks like there’d be a lot of “whittling” on the laminates
to get the updated coils on, and I have no idea if the plug wire
could be oriented correctly.
Thought I’d ask before trying to reinvent the wheel.
Both the original coils have open secondary windings.
Thanks.
