Motor runs well but leaks gear lube so a reseal seems needed.
Does anybody know if any of the Sierra or other seal kits will work for this job? I’m sure all can be identified and purchased by dimension but a kit would make things easier….
Part numbers as I have them:
drive shaft seal (under pump) 901307
gasket ((gearcase/lower unit)) 901555
shift rod seal 901618-1
spacer 50670
retainer 901671
bearing cage O ring 74305
prop shaft seal 901118Also, most books seem to specify 90 wt gear oil, but the West Bend factory manual talks about "underwater grease" but is vague about what that is. Advice?
September 28, 2016 at 10:55 am #44840I have an Elgin 12, but haven’t had time to go through it. You will probably have to sort those parts out piece by piece. The O-rings can probably be matched up. The seals can also be matched up at an auto parts store, by using the National catalog. They show seals by size, and it’s suprising what’s available if you can find someone willing to look through the catalog. I was recently looking through some old Chrysler outboard parts catalog’s, and I suspect Chrysler may have carried over some of these West Bend parts and still used them. Chrysler parts are still shown on the ”Electronic Parts Catalog” currently used by Mercury outboard dealerships. Maybe you can find a dealer who would be willing to come up with some numbers?
Then, you might find these parts on ebay. I found a Quicksilver impeller for my Elgin [still available from Mercury] by matching it up with a Chrysler part. Just a few idea’s for you…September 28, 2016 at 1:09 pm #44842Thanks, Jerry! Turns out the Mercury parts catalog is online–which I sort of knew but had forgotten–and included parts for a 1979 12 hp Chrysler using a very similar gearcase. Seal kit is FK1065/Sierra 18-2638. Cost about $23 including shipping from Amazon and various other vendors, or ebay. Of course, there is no guarantee that all the pieces are going to fit. For what it’s worth, this is a breakdown of the Sierra kit:
18-2638 LOWER UNIT SEAL KIT Replaces: FK1065 CONTAINS
PART # DESC. O.E. # QTY.
18-0500 Seal 26-817472 1
18-0584 Seal 26-66022, 26-F346118 1
18-0593 Seal 26-F901307-2 2
18-0623 Lower Unit Gasket 27-F286555 1
18-2945 Washer 12-19183 3
18-7138 O-Ring 25-F455305 1Thanks again. This is such a great resource.

September 29, 2016 at 11:48 pm #44954Super! You may get lucky and be able to use some of the seals anyway. Let me know how that turns out, because I plan on going through my 12 Elgin over the winter. I’m sure mine will need seals as well. My lower unit bearing carrier is busted from freeze damage, but I did find a good used replacement. Good luck with your project!
September 30, 2016 at 12:04 am #44956Many of the numbers are the same except for the "F" in front, so I have a pretty high expectation that most of pieces in the kit will fit.
I have it running now, and it seems to start and run well. Love those Tillotson carbs with the float bowl drain and the brass floats. It does have an odd symptom, a sort of miss/clank that makes the power head move back and forth on the springs. I thought it might be the dog clutch in the gearcase catching and releasing, but it does the same thing in gear. Could possibly be just a miss, and the clank is from the spring suspension? Is this a familiar symptom to West Bend/Elgin folks?
Compression is about 75 psi in each cylinder, a bit low. The manual calls for 85. But I want to exercise it and feed it some Engine Tuner before coming to any conclusions…..
I do wish the throttle didn’t work in reverse from the OMC motors!
