      Hi All,

I’m installing a starter in a 18 HP 1963 Evinrude Fastwin that never had a starter before. I don’t have any of the stock starter wiring so working from scratch with two lengths of 6 gauge wire to get it outside of the motor.

I can’t see any obvious path where the stock wiring would exit from. I’d like to avoid drilling the housing if I can and don’t really want to go through the hassle of pulling off the power head if I don’t have to.

Any thoughts or suggestions of solutions that have worked for others would be greatly appreciated. I’ve attached some photos to show the motor I am working with. Thanks.

I think your only option is to drill a hole in the lower pan. You can find a rubber grommet to dress it up and eliminate the chance of having bare metal chafing the wires.

In factory configuration there was a harness fastened to the front of the lower pan and the plug where the boat side harness connects is where your kill button is now. You can drill the lower pan or remove your kill button and run the wires out there. I have a ’67 that was either converted or missing the motor side harness when i bought it. I put a start button and a lanyard kill switch on the port side of the lower pan and ran the battery cables out the fron where the kill button would be.
