I just purchased a 18hp 1956 Evinrude. When cleaning up the carb I took off the glass bulb and it appears someone made a gasket for it and something appears to be missing. Not sure what or if needed.

Also where is the best place to start looking for parts?

If it’s a 1956 model, it would be 15hp. If it’s labeled as 18hp, then it would be 1957 or later. A few places for parts:

        marineengine.com
        vintageoutboard.com
        timsoutboard.com
        ganotech.com

The attach diagram and parts list are for my ’55 Johnson RD-17 25hp — yours shouldn’t be too different. The cork ring was replaced with neoprene in later years and the cork filter became mesh.

Perhaps the scintered bowl filter is missing, post some pictures and we will let you know….The 57 models didn’t use the glass bowl filter set up, but I think the parts for the 10hp carb are the same:
              303122 filter bowl gasket
              303133 filter
              304539 filter nut

Someone may have removed the bowl filter because it was plugged and restricting the fuel flow.
