A "1925 Elto Rowboat Motor type C" followed me home today.
this is my first rowboat motor.

Is there any literature, online manuals, etc., "Out there" for these?
I see nothing in the reference library.

Were these really steered via "rope" by hand? It would seem
rather awkward to "hold a rope in one hand" and "fishing pole"
in the other. Any photos of how the old timer’s steered in the day?
      Thanks!

Mercuryman, thanks for the info! The manual says nothing
about "steering" the outboard, but full of good info otherwise.
The manual is for a Rudder Twin type C. I have the Light Twin Type C.
          What’s the difference? Horsepower?

You steer it with two lines connected to bar on rudder swivel.

There is no such thing as a "Rudder Twin". That is a slang term used today to describe an Elto Light Twin.
They were steered with ropes. When you let go of the ropes, it would generally go straight. Pull on one rope to go right, or pull on the other rope to go left. Steering with a rudder is not very accurate.

Hotrod, I’ve only rode a horse a couple of times. Does that
make me qualified to steer the Elto?
I’m guessing Ole learned a few new cuss words before he
                finally added a tiller handle!

Took some photo of my new 1925 Elto.
It appears to be a complete, unmolested unit with
all original parts, but it’s my first, so I’m no judge.
If anyone knows better, please let me know.

                  Q. The manual mentions a condenser inside the
coil. Is this a replaceable part?

                  Q. What’s the best way to clean up the engine
without destroying the 90 year old decals?

                  Edit: Annoying side-ways photos again.
                  How do I prevent that?

Well done – figured you would come up with a Ruddertwin sooner or later. The condenser is sort of replaceable. It’s inside the coil container. Those containers are packed with a black tar-like substance. There are a number of posts on the site about opening the containers to replace/repair the components like this one : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5752&p=29602&hilit=ruddertwin#p29602,
I’ll admit that I didn’t even try – I just got a piece of PVC pipe and a Zephyr coil ,condenser and built a replacement 🙂

Thanks Kev, interesting thread! After I get the old Elto cleaned up,
I’ll put a battery to it and see if my coil is alive.

Try downloading them from Photobucket or another online host. It seems when they come directly from a computer, they can have a mind of their own. 😀
