I bought two sets of decals, from two different dealers, for my 1928 Fastwin after a friend suggested the first set was wrong. I went with the silver set.  What would the blue set go to?

IMHO, the light blue decal is definitely not correct.  The other one is closer, but the silver background behind “Evinrude” in all decals should be light grey with slightly darker gray stippling.  The serif on the “F” should go behind the V of Evinrude.  I can’t be sure, but I believe the color of “Evinrude” is not such a deep blue, more blue with grey, kind chalky.  On the side decals, the block behind the lightning bolts should have wavy lines.  Interestingly, the gold background decal with the S&O instructions is more like the original than the one that came with the other set with the silver background, but I can’t verify what it says to know whether it’s the correct one for the ’28 Fastwin.

That said, nice motor!  If you haven’t opened it up, consider doing so.  Check the pistons for cracks or chips and check the piston pin retaining hardware.  I think you already know about the water tube fittings.  Are you getting good cooling with that prop?  Trying to outrun Bill and Lincoln?

Thanks for your input, Tom.  Good thing I’m not doing this for a museum.  I like the look of the set I went with.  The blue decal doesn’t even fit above the tabs on the tank.  Maybe I’ll put it on my Prius?

I haven’t run this motor on a boat yet.  Maybe this weekend?  I’ll let you know how that goes.

Not set yet.  Pester Bill and Lincoln about it.

The decal with the blue background was produced by a now deceased member years ago to “fill the gap” for motors needing decals. The original Evinrude decal has a lot of minute detail that back in the day was difficult to reproduce economically. So many people wanted water-applied decals, and those minute details are difficult to reproduce on water-applied. Now with vinyl and newer printing techniques, high quality  reproductions are a lot easier to make. I have a friend in AOMCI who has been on the club way longer than most and he spent considerable money having a print shop analyze an original 1929 and determine what the original colors were prior to the effects of many years of oil, gas, sunlight and abuse, that change the appearance. The original Fastwin and Speeditwin had the silver background with fish scales……extremely difficult to economically reproduce. Notice the fish scales are not symmetrical on this original 1930 Evinrude decal. Neither are the ones on the decal my friend had reproduced. The reproduced one is for the 28/29 version.

Thanks for that info George.  Very interesting! I like that eager font on the Speeditwin.
