hi, when I was a kid I build a small inboard dinghy using a 1928 Johnson lower unit attached to the bottom and a 1947 Briggs cast iron 1.5hp horizontal shaft engine on the rear seat with a right angle garden tractor F-N-R gearbox next to it. Hardware store pulleys connected them together. It worked fantastic. I have wanted to replicate that now (for some silly reason!).
I found a 1928 lower unit listed as A35 2.5hp and bought it, but the prop diemeter seems a bit smaller than I remember – looks like about 8″ (but it’s been half a century!)
What were the models and prop diameters in 1928 for Johnsons?
Thanks

December 29, 2024 at 10:29 pm #292962thanks guys yes it was very fun when I was a young teenager to build that rig.
I seem to recall the propeller was bigger than the eight or 9 inches that would appear to go onto the lower unit I just purchased on eBay
I’m gonna have to find a resource to the propeller sizes of the various outboards in 1928 from Johnson. I pretty much remember that it was a two cylinder outboard.
and if I go with this lower unit that I just obtained, it will need a propeller anyway
as I recall, I didn’t have the pulley ratio was quite right and the engine was pretty much lugging which made it sound like a one lunger. but that actually seemed more like a feature rather than a bug!
also I rigged up the speedometer from my Schwinn bicycle to one of the shafts so I had like a little tachometer on it lol
it’s too bad my parents couldn’t give a shit enough about what I was doing to take a couple of pictures. But on the other hand since I was left alone I could go anywhere I wanted in the contraption!
