Looks like a real cut-to-shape and beat-to-fit job but somebody made it work with what they had available to them back in the day. Still a cool motor and if you can find the right parts, another piece of history will be restored.

together. With all them holes drilled in the flywheel, there’s hardly
any "meat" left to hold it together!Prepare to be boarded!

May 18, 2018 at 2:05 am #76223The tank looks correct, the decal is definitely a later addition from a different size tank. Evinrude lettering would not have run around the corner up front, they were to well designed for that mistake. The rest is for the real experts here. Cool motor, good luck with it.
May 18, 2018 at 12:29 pm #76231Squire, from what little digging I did, the real early Speeditwin gas
tanks had the fill cap on the port side, and had a gold colored
decal.
I found one photo of a 1946 Speeditwin tank, and another
from the same era, but not dated, other than being a model 6039.
I didn’t find any decals where the "E" on Evinrude wrapped around
the corner as far as mine. I don’t know enough to be sure it’s
even a Speeditwin decal.
First three photos my tank.
Thanks!P.S.- anyone have photos of the Elto Speedster’s flywheel,
timer, coil, what the top of the power head looks like
with the flywheel removed, etc?Prepare to be boarded!
May 18, 2018 at 7:20 pm #76261The oldest a 6039 Speeditwin could be is 1939. It was the first Speeditwin with a one piece cast muffler. The Speeditwins of 1936, ’37’ & ’38 were Eltos. The Speeditwin tank held two and a half gallons, the Speedifour/Big Four held four. So although the tank decal would fit a Speedifour, it is still incorrect. All the decals I have seen have the name of the motor on the side . . . 🙄
