Here is a spec chart. You just have to figure out
what Evinrude has that carb. My guess would be
Handitwin. Experimenting – I found that not enough
lift – motor won’t reach full RPM. Too much lift –
they run way rich making difficult, if not impossible,
to get the motor leaned out. May explain your
mixture setting.
Tubs.A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
July 4, 2023 at 9:42 pm #277696Thanks Tubs! My 1/8″ gap “guess” is more in the ball park than the 5/16″ it was.
After I made the new banjo bolt, I attached the line with a little valve grinding
compound to lap the seats on each side of the banjo.
I suspect my slow drip is because of the beveled seat on the carb body
looks pretty rough, even after lapping. I’m not sure how one could renew
the seat even again.Prepare to be boarded!
July 5, 2023 at 10:26 am #277711Yesterday, I installed a new poppet valve stop, closer to specs.
I test ran the Viking again this morning, with pretty much
the same results…… didn’t want to stay running. Kept playing
with the needle adjustment and 1/8″ turn open still seemed the
best. While I cured my leaky poppet valve cover leaks, it seemed to
be “oozing” more that normal fuel around the float needle cover hole.
I removed the cover with the petcock still “on”, and see that the
fuel level was only 1/4″ below the top of the bowl.
In looking at Tubs chart, 13/16″ is stated for a similar HP motor.I had the float needle out yesterday, and noted that the float clips
were in the needle grooves, and the cork was sandwiched snuggle
between the clips. Perhaps I have the wrong needle?
The cork appears to be in good shape, and still looked “varnishy”.Not sure what I’m going to try now. Perhaps put some lower grooves
in the needle?
Stay tuned for a future video where the Viking stays running.
P.S.- A 1935 Elto fisherman, twin opposed, is shown as 4 hp
in an ad I found yesterday. I can’t remember what the Evinrude
Handitwin is in the chart above, but perhaps all the same powerheads?Prepare to be boarded!
July 5, 2023 at 5:58 pm #277723Finally got the carb issues taken care of, and it starts and runs okay, but after a couple
of minutes it will quit pumping water. I dropped the gear case and found no issues with
the metal impeller, or any pluggage. The test barrel needed cleaned anyway, as it looked
like chocolate milk! Drained, scrubbed, refilled with clean water. Motor still does the same
thing. If you shut if off, and restart it, it pumps water great again, …. for a couple of minutes!Perhaps it would not do this if the motor was on a boat, but a PITA just to find out.
I was hoping to get all the bugs out before the lake test.I’ve tried running the motor slower, and it will still quit pumping water in two minutes
or less.
Does the prop seem too large / aggressive for a 4 hp, perhaps causing cavitation?
It’s 8-1/2″ diameter…… no idea on the pitch.I made a new, lower groove in the float pin clip, so I could lower the fuel level
an 1/8″ or hair more. That seem to do the trick as fuel isn’t oozing out of the cover
now, and it’s starting good. It still likes to run with the needle 1/8″ turn open though.
I can’t remember what shape the needle or seat is in.VIDEO
https://youtu.be/WGfp1-Pc5WsI used my mini tubing cutter to scribe a new groove in the float pin.
Seemed to work okay.Impeller was nice and tight on the driveshaft, and nothing was binding
or rubbing.Does the 8-1/2″ prop seem too big for a 4 hp?
Prepare to be boarded!
July 5, 2023 at 6:22 pm #277728Buc – with the added lower groove in the carb float pin, does your cork float extend from the new lower groove all the way to the upper retainer clip groove? Or what is the total height of your float? I’m getting ready to test fire my Sea King project and when I installed a new float I made it the same height as the old one and I’m wondering if the new float should have been taller, shorter or the same height as the old one.

Bob, this float pin only had the groove on the bottom end, under the float.
So the two clips and the cork dropped down 1/8″ plus on my redo.It appears to be a homemade cork float I made three years ago, and doped
with super glue…….. not even sure if the float pin is original…… I remember
stealing one from a Johnson K model for one project!Prepare to be boarded!
July 5, 2023 at 10:42 pm #277732OK, so here’s the new float I put in my Sea King 3hp. It’s about 3/4″ in height, same as the old float. The distance between the top and bottom retainer clips on my carb is about 1.25″ so with the new float installed up against the top clip, there’s about 1/2″ between the bottom of the float and the bottom retainer clip. Seems to me that the thinner the float, the more fuel would enter the bowl before it reaches the float and raises the float pin to cut off the flow. Just trying to avoid a fuel overflow through the cover like you had and wondering if I need to use a taller float. Thoughts?

"Every time you remove a broken or seized bolt an angel gets his wings."July 6, 2023 at 9:08 am #277742Bob, you can try it the way it is, but in the mean time,
I think I’d look for a taller cork so it’s sandwiched between
the clips, and perhaps a little wider one would be good too.Prepare to be boarded!
July 6, 2023 at 1:26 pm #277764I did a trial run with it this morning and the motor ran fine but I did get a little overflow out the top of the float bowl. I have a taller cork I can use so I’ll put that in which should eliminate any overflow.
