July 27, 2023 at 9:54 pm #278567Thanks, Tubs! Yes, the decals are original and in decent shape. In fact, a member, forgot his name but wanted a transcription of the decals on top of the tank which give instructions on starting the motor on one side of the tank and instructions for lubrication on the other side. These are all perfectly legible, although I do have the original owner’s manual. Eventually, I plan to build a box to store the motor, patterned after that father/son with an old Johnson motor on the latest cover of the AOMCI magazine.

July 28, 2023 at 12:05 pm #278590One more comment on this 1936 Evinrude Fisherman motor. For a newbie to motor overhaul, as I am, I stretched outside my limits , me being a chemist and not an engineer. However, what really stumped me was verifying the status of the ignition system. Basically, I did not have faith that an 87 year old magneto, coil, condenser, and high tension wires could actually still be viable! In fact, all components in that system were fine except for wires from the coil to the plugs.
I could not have gotten the motor running without the invaluable expertise and hands-on repairing gotten from Art DeKalb. He is about a 2 hour drive from my home, but the trip was worth it. Art checked the coil and condenser on his testing unit, disassembled and cleaned the points and replaced the high tension wires.
When I left Art that day, we proved that we indeed did have spark going to both plugs, and the rest of the project was just cleaning and a bit of rebuilding.
So, thanks again to Art DeKalb for his kind help and experience!

November 10, 2023 at 12:10 am #282375So, it has been a while since I added to this forum, Tubs, but I remember what you said about not just leaning the Evinrude up against the wall. Well, I searched some photos of motor crates, including the cover photo of the father/son with the ’49 Johnson motor in the crate. So, I built my own crate out of pine board 1 X 8 ‘s. it is below and now safely in my shed. Still gotta get a boat though, LOL.

My experience, putting a motor in a box, not only protects them from dents
& breakage but also reduces the effects from seasonal changes when stored
in an uncontrolled environment.
If there is a chapter near where you live and they have a wet meet, if you
were to bring your motor, I’m sure you would find a boat to run it on.
TubsA "Boat House Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
