The square tiller is proper. The proof is the 1936 Johnson advertisement that shows this (attached). I recently bought one of these and it was missing the tiller. Doug & Matt Penn supplied the missing piece. My triangular tiller bracket was mounted on the starboard side (can bolt up for either port of starboard use) so I suspect the original user was left handed.
I ended up making a bracket and square tube tiller handle, which seem to work okay.
I didn’t know any of the outboard manufacturers ever took in consideration “left handed”
operators……… interesting! Thanks.

What grip did you use? I have the same setup, but no grip.
Not sure anymore where I got the grip, but doubt it’s correct.
I’ve ordered some for Johnson outboards from member Big Rich
on EBay.
It’s a square tiller, but a round grip, and not sure what size ID fit it.
Here is video of my 1937 Johnson 1.7hp Model 110 on the lake. It is all original. The tiller looks different from yours. Have fun putting around the lake with your model 100.
