I have an Evinrude Scout I’m restoring. I’d like to get it running rather than just be a wall hangar. I have the flywheel off and figured I should clean up the points before putting it back together. It was then that I noticed the points are not opening at all. Taking a hard look at the points they don’t look like any points set I have seen on an engine of any type. (I’ve attached a picture below.) They look like they are composed of a solid piece of metal with no visible adjustment. Furthermore, the only thing I can see between the cam and the movable portion of the points is a felt pad. Is there something solid buried in the felt pad to actuate the points? How do I adjust them? And what is the point gap supposed to be?

Any and all advice would be welcome.

      Thanks,

      Scott

The points are adjusted by loosening that screw.
The felt pad is just a wiper to absorb excess oil/
and lubricates the cam at the same time.

The flash drive that I bring, when I’m away from home, has gone blank so I can’t provide much for pictures. I did find this on the internet. You simply loosen the screw, push the point assembly in, tighten the screw and check the gap. It’s a hit or miss process that you get more skilled at over time. Tubs

That did the trick! Thanks! I didn’t realize there was a little pin inside that felt pad that actuated the portion of the points on the spring steel tab. Can anyone tell me what the point cap is supposed to be set at?

            Thanks again for your help,

            Robert

I’m pretty sure its .015 for the points and .025 for the plugs. Tubs
