Ok first the embarrassing question. Putting it back together, is it possible to put piston in wrong? (180 degrees), it is a 2 stroke.
The story behind this motor is the man that started mercury motors found a bunch of these in warehouse he bought that were returned by customers due to poor starting. They say this man changed type of carborator from poppit to something else. QUESTION, does anyone know what type of carb he would have used. I have no idea how a poppit valve even works. Any info would be helpful. I know it ran 50 years ago when I was out in the boat with my dad. But has been sitting on a shelf a long time.

The piston “Ramp” should point DOWN (Exhaust side)
and the piston “Step” should be UP, intake side.
This is my 1939 version.Prepare to be boarded!

July 4, 2024 at 8:57 pm #288845Sounds like u have one of these motors. That is great. Maybe u can answer another question for me. What type of material is used as a seal or bearing material on the brass seals. What it looks like to me is a tape with a slippery friction free surface on one side and a adhesive side to stick to the die casted piece. Do they still make something like that?

I’m not sure what brass seals you’re talking about?
My 1939 version does not appear to use any brass cased
seal.
On mine, there is some rubber tape-like seals on the prop shaft
and drive shaft to help keep the water out.
I think I replace it with Black Ultra Permatex sealant.Prepare to be boarded!
