I have a 1937 Thor (Sea King ) 2.4hp. The lower unit was seized.  I removed lower and got the prop shaft un stuck.  I seen a post from years ago where Mumbles sourced some sort of seal for his.  Does anybody have any thoughts on a replacement seal of some sort? This will only be ran rarely, then drained to let all the water out.  Thanks for any input.   Brian.

In case anyone needed a refresher on what those gear cases looks like,
here’s mine when I opened it up.
I don’t believe I put any kind of replacement seal in it, but not sure.

Hopefully I found something new to put in mine…. looks like they just
had a “rubber band” of sorts for a seal.

            Founds some notes on mine……..

Lower Unit – gears and bushings okay. Replaced
two old cork seals with leather.

Thanks Buccaneer.   So to be clear on the round seals were created with leather? Mine were so deteriorated they crumbled and fell out in pieces.

That’s what I wrote in my notes six years ago,
                and that’s all I know!

Just guessing but they look like a slice of hose if you could match something & use sealer of some kind. I used gas hose to center wiring in a 3/4″ flexable conduit. Look at hoses at NAPA or Home Dept for starters maybe.

Wow, that’s going back a few years!

I spent way too much time on that motor and still haven’t had it running yet. The rotted out gas tank needs some love as does the mag. It has new bushings on the crank and in the gearcase along with a new shafts, water pump cam and follower, along with other parts. Guess it should go back on the ‘To Do’ list.

I did find SKF seals for my Evinrude Sportsman and Sportwin motors but I think I used whatever I had on hand for the Thor (Seaking) and made an aluminum adapter for the prop shaft seal. Can’t say for sure but I think I bored out the driveshaft bushing I made to take a lip seal. No notes or part numbers on hand.  Sorry about that.DSC00045

Not sure how two of those photos appeared but I’ll try to post the proper ones.
