The recoil rope would not pull.  Motor spins freely.  I took the recoil assembly apart this weekend.  Lots of rust, including all surfaces of the recoil spring.  Can this be cleaned up/salvaged?  It has the original starter rope with the metal inner core.  Can I use something else for a starter rope assuming similar diameter?  Site said all of my photos were too big.

I’m not trying to get this old girl running but would like to clean this up if possible!

You might need to re-size and/or compress your images to get them below 2MB each.  If you don’t know how to do that you could try asking a friend or family member.  It’s an easy process  (if you know how!) and pretty typical for preparing images for most forums like this.

I know how.  2 Mb is quite a bit smaller than I’m used to.

I’d probably set the thing in a plastic container and cover with some Evaporust or Metal Rescue and let it soak for a day or two.   That should clean it up pretty well.   You can use a modern day starter rope of comparable diameter.    Don’t use some nylon rope from the hardware store – get some real starter rope from a lawn mower or small engine shop.   I ordered a spool of Stens blue starter rope for my outboard restoration projects – it works great.

you could just wire brush the whole thing and apply a coat of spray oil and wipe dry.

swipe the spring with a oily rag  if still useable.

5/32 rope should do  see list
