Looking for a parts manual the the subject motor, especially
for the gear case and driveshaft details.

When I turn the drive gear by hand on the driveshaft, the driveshaft
turns, but there’s a lot of slack before it would turn the powerhead.
I see no reason to believe this model would have a stub shaft,
but it sounds like the slop is lower down, and not in the powerhead
      receiver.

      Thanks.

I have the parts list you asked for, but it isn’t very user friendly.  This one might be more help.  The drive shaft has square “splines” at top, and a key at the bottom.  Pretty basic.

Thanks Frank. That one looks like the shape of my gearcase.
Not sure if I have the spring loaded packing on the prop shaft
          though. Will look again.

Those were “busy” parts drawings back in the day.
I ended up tearing apart a parts engine and it had
a better driveshaft and wobbler, so I switched them
out and the slack in the drivetrain is much better.
There was a spring on the inside the gearcase cap assembly.
Kind of a weird setup, but I guess it keeps the gear lash
              constant perhaps?

              Thanks!

See 28, 29, and 30 in the first drawing I posted.  #30 packing is a rubber washer.  The spring keeps axial pressure on the parts and at the same time “mushes” the rubber to make it “hug” the shaft.  Goofy setup that almost works.

Gear lash is a balancing act between the natural forces trying to move the gears apart and the forward force of the prop shaft from prop thrust.

Gotta wonder how the 78 year old spring pressure is
compared to when new! Guess I’ll find out when
                  I fire it up.

A few months late…wondering ‘FrankR’ do you happen to have a parts diagram or other print materials on the Sea King 5hp 94GG9014A?

                    TIA
