I have a 1954 Sea King and checking out the lower unit oil is easy, but I just picked up a 1946 Mecury KD4 and it doesn’t look like it has the same upper and lower screws to drain the lower unit oil. Any ideas? Also I am pretty sure I read that the impeller on the KD4 is directly behind the prop is that everyone else’s understanding? I figure I need to look at the state of the impeller.

The Mercury takes grease, not gear lube. Lubriplate 105 or
John Deere Corn Head grease. I believe you just pack the housing
with grease when you have the cover off.

Welcome to the present from 1984 mr smith.

Let us know how it turns out with lubricating the gear case after you address the impeller issue. In February and March there were a few threads on mercury gear cases from this era and pre-war stuff too. They should be pretty easy to find. I have not yet used the corn head grease but plan to at some point.

Greenthumbs and fifty2one are of great help with these little mercurys!

              Good luck!

Corn head grease can be bought thru your local John Deere dealer,
                      or here’s where I order mine online….
