November 5, 2015 at 3:53 am #26566Hi Brian
Thanks very much for your reply/suggestion.
I have since tried to get on that site but I could only bring up Minesota Gophers,so I was wondering if you could give me a bit more guidance as to getting to the right spot with Dixie H.Sorry to trouble you, but I am still struggling with using computers!!
Thanks again for your assistance…….it’s much appreciated!!Kind regards
MonteNZNovember 5, 2015 at 4:31 am #26569on the gopher site there is a classified area, top right, click on that …or… try, oldoutboarddecals@gmail.com
that is her site. Any problems, call/email. BrianNovember 5, 2015 at 1:22 pm #26578I see your motor has the metal Scott Atwater name band. I have 1947 Scott Atwater 3.6hp that is in pretty good shape. It is missing the metal name band that wraps around the bottom of the tank. I’ve been looking for one for a 3 to 4 years. My motor runs pretty sweet and I’ll keep her in my collection.
Glad you have a time keep of you and your dad’s time together. Make memories with that motor by bringing your kids and your grandkids fishing or putting out jug lines. Great time to tell them stories of you and your dad. Those memories are the best.
Cheers,
David T.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it looks like we have the same motors. Dad couldn’t afford a new outboard so he bought an ex hire motor. Fortunately it had only been in fresh water. It ran well but was looking a bit scruffy, so he gave it a clean up and repainted it, unfortunately not the original colour. We had a lot of fun with it until 1960 when I bought my first motor. The Scott was carefully stored away in the garage with the idea that I would fully restore it one day. As I am not getting any younger I have now decided to get on with it. I have managed to get spray cans of the correct matching paint made up using the original paint on the bottom of the fuel tank as a match,so it should look original when finished. The tank should come up ok when I fill in the dents and get rid of the surface rust.
I am surprised that you haven’t been able to find the aluminium name band that goes round the tank. I would have thought that unlike here in New Zealand there would be plenty of old 1946-47 Scott Atwater motors…… I have only seen two other Scott Atwater motors here in NZ and that was about 40 years back.Best wishes

Thanks very much for the excellent photos. It looks in very good condition considering that it was rescued from the bottom of a lake! It certainly looks like my one.One thing I notice different, is that your one appears to have a Model No. Serial No.plate fixed to the side of the clamp bracket. Mine has only the numbers 470 1881 on the engine cylinder block which I understand shows it to be a 1947 model. I can’t find any sign of a serial no. on it anywhere.
You may be able to answer some questions for me please.(1) The tiller arm on your one appears to be chrome finished. The original arm was missing on dad’s one when he bought it and had a piece of strap steel as a replacement.Fortunately I found a correct replacement tiller years ago but it was a grey color and appeared to have been zinc or cadmium plated, so is chrome correct or not? The next question is are the slotted steel plates and the adjustable tilt bar on the insides of the clamps zinc or cadmium plated or painted like the rest of the motor? My last question is, dad never had an owners/operators/parts book of any sort and I was wondering that if you had one, would you mind helping me out with a copy please?
You mentioned that the aluminium band round the tank with Scott Atwater moulded into it is missing. I would be very happy to keep my eyes open over here in case I did find one…..as I said previously I haven’t seen another scott for many years but a group of us enthusiasts hope to do a display of old outboards at the Auckland Boat Show next year so you never know what might turn up!
What would be very helpful is if you could take another photo of your motor tilted up this time, showing the underneath tilting arrangement and tilt lock mechanism as my one is missing…… with a bit of luck I will be able to make a replacement! Thanks again
Best wishes
