I just picked up this little motor which is in great cosmetic condition, has compression of 70psi and has spark. I haven’t attempted to start it yet. I’ve never worked on a motor of this vintage and have a few questions.
1. Are tune-up parts, such as coils, condenser and points, still available?
2. Are points set at .020" and plug gap at .030" like the later models?
3. What "grease" is used in the lower unit?
4. Calls for Champion H10I spark plug – all I can find online is H10C – is that ok?
Also, the recoil is not engaging the flywheel. Looks like the spring-loaded pawls are on the flywheel itself, rather than on the recoil. The pawls and springs are there and I assume they are supposed to engage the recoil to start, and once started, are supposed to retract by centrifugal force. Any help figuring this out would be appreciated.
LindyJanuary 3, 2016 at 7:38 pm #29608Hi Lindy, nice little motor you have there but unfortunately, ignition parts are obsolete but they can be found on Ebay occasionally if needed or an ad can be placed in the Free Classified section here. A good coil will read about 3500+ ohms from the high tension terminal to ground. The points should be cleaned and polished until shiny using various grades of wet/dry sandpaper. They should also be disassembled and all of the small brass pieces cleaned at the same time to help keep any electrical resistance to a minimum. If the condenser is faulty, it can be replaced with a modern Vishay or Orange Drop capacitor with the correct 0.10 uF rating. The points are set at .020" while the plug is gapped at .025". H10C is the replacement for the original H10J but there are other options.

Since the gearcase has no seals, grease must be used instead of oil. John Deere Cornhead Grease seems to be a bit more popular than Lubriplate 105 but either will work.

The pawls should be extended to engage the ratchet until centrifugal force retracts them. If the springs have been worked on, they might be holding the pawls closed instead of open.
January 3, 2016 at 8:03 pm #29613Thanks for the info. Been playing with that recoil and she is set up as you describe. Springs are there and working and Pawls are open but they just aren’t engaging the ratchet. Looks like that ring,43A204 is missing. Maybe that’s the problem? I made sure the pawls are flush against the flywheel nut (turned the nut to the proper position) as shown, but no joy. That brings up another question – what is the flywheel nut torque?
January 3, 2016 at 8:08 pm #29614Also looks like 41A192 are missing. Are they just washers? Hard to tell on the diagram.
January 3, 2016 at 9:50 pm #29618New Old Stock ignition points were last made by OMC in 1986 and cost $24.75. The OMC # 580016 are for the last part number. It is identical to the visual thread posting. They are currently available , NOS, on e-bay for $15 to $50 EACH plus postage. Enter the part # and pay your money…
January 4, 2016 at 4:41 pm #29649If the part 43A204 (equalizer ring) is missing the pawls wont engage. I have one left over from my 4416 build if you are interested. I think the 41A192s are just a small plastic washer so those you should be able to find at a local hardware store. DO you have the parts diagrams for that motor? If not I can get those to you as well. Also have a lot of misc parts for that motor laying around. I am also running a champion J6C in mine and it runs great. Let me know if you have any questions.
January 4, 2016 at 4:45 pm #29650January 4, 2016 at 6:56 pm #29655I have in original boxes, NOS # 580016 point assemblies for $15 plus $6 shipping, and NOS # 300153 condensers for $10 plus $6 shipping. Send PM if interested.

Send PM if interested. Thanks – I’ll keep that in mind. The motor has good spark, but I went ahead and pulled the flywheel today – coil looks original, but looks to be in great condition. Points look good and were set right at .020". I went ahead and cleaned them up, cleaned everything on the armature plate, so hopefully she’ll be good to go. Next task, pull the carb and check her out.
January 4, 2016 at 7:47 pm #29658Still need to know torque spec for the flywheel nut.
