There were serveral changes to Irgies "Fishing motor of the future" as it got into the hands of actual fishermen. As previously mentioned modern seals may be used (SKF 5523 & SKF 4770) The fuel system (dare I say Carburetor) was designedon a computer and is totally unique to this model. . . 😉

I am just getting back to this project. Thanks Garry for the great information. This is the exact motor I have. I have not taken the motor apart yet. In fact have not gotten it to run yet. It is not getting fuel. Something needs cleaning. I am assuming the impellers are rubber, but I may be wrong here. They may indeed be metal as someone suggested. I will find out. Thanks for all the great information.

I’m new also. My ’48 Sportwin doesn’t look like yours. Did they do a remodel in ’49 or 50?

Are you sure your motor is a Sportwin, and not a Sportsman? The quickest way to tell the difference is the Sportwin models came with a clear plastic fuel gauge on the front of the tank. The single cylinder Sportsman motors didn’t. Any photos?

No luck loading the picture. Using smart phone. yes, I’m certain it’s a sportwin. says so on the front and it’s got two cylinders. brass tag says OB35A 4371.393 oops… thats’ not 48?? It’s a twin with 3.3 HP but about 7 pounds heavier.

OK, yours is a model 4371, not a 4423, and was produced from ’41-’47. It is an opposed twin while the ’48 and later 4423’s were alternate firing inline twins. Two completely different animals with the same name.

Yours is a nice motor by the way and it appears to be in good condition. With the painted tank and emblem on the front, I’m guessing it’s a ’46 or ’47.

Looking in The Old Outboard Book it looks like the 4371 was built only in 3 model years…s/n up to 10000 was the older style tank/teardrop decal and s/n 10001 to 30000 was 1946 and 30001 & up was the 1947 so yes it appears Tims motor is a 46 or 47….I don’t what the OB35A is but wonder if the 393 is the start of the serial number which might indicate a 47. I have a 41 with the original decals that’s a great runner.
