I posted this on current projects pertaining to a 1959 35 hp golden jubilee. I am restoring an old aluminum boat. I replaced the harness from the switch to the solenoid box. Carefully marked all wires and where they terminated. There was one wire under the dash that was blanked off so I made a harness with one less wire. I want to turn the motor over and nothing happens. Upon further inspection of the motor the harness from the solenoid box to the side of the motor is deteriorated and also the harness under the cowl. Is this repairable without spending $850 at NY Marine. Can the connectors be reused and make my own harness? And BTW I jumped across the solenoid and the motor turns over, and the choke solenoid operates with or without the key on. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this motor? Under the cowl all the way to the switch? Thanks in advance

August 29, 2022 at 6:00 pm #265224Ok after pulling the carb and the starters unhooked the pin plug on the inside of the cowl. Now how do I go about disassembling this plug to repair broken wires? There is a white wire that’s all but naked with a bare spot on the choke wire and the main starter wire

August 29, 2022 at 6:28 pm #265231splice it or clean it up well and put new insolation.
August 29, 2022 at 6:37 pm #265232So no way to break the connector apart? Some of those wires are REALLY close together with damage right next to the plug

August 29, 2022 at 8:57 pm #265239tinkerman here is another option. Along about 1960 OMC decided to do away with that trouble connector. They ran the battery and ignition wires from the motor through the cowl and connected them in the junction box. I had the same issue as you on my 1957 fast twin electric. I found a set of jumper-cables and cut off the clamps. I wanted a red and a black colored wire and made my own wire loom with a starter wire and choke wire. It came out pretty darn good. I know it’s not original! The wiring connectors are worth more than several motors. Sending some pictures.

August 30, 2022 at 7:41 am #265268I actually have a 57 Johnson that I bought for this boat WITH new harnesses. But then I bought an old fiberglass boat from the 50’s mostly for the trailer, well it had this golden jubilee on it and looks to be really low hour engine. I didn’t think the smaller harnesses we’re that bad so I thought I’d use the Evinrude and keep the javelin for another project or for horse trading. I may put an ad on the classifieds and see what happens.
