Hello to all! I acquired this old outboard..and the serial number indicates that it is a 1950 Elgin. The only trouble I am having is getting this put back together correctly before even attempting to start it. When I went to go look at it..the owner failed to mention that he backed into it with his car (he had it hooked to his work bench) and the swivel housing is bent..no damage elsewhere. My question is..after searching the internet…I can only find swivel housings for 1951-1952 5hp. Elgins..not the 7.5 that I have pictured here. He also stated that his dad said it is missing points (something else he failed to mention before picking it up) My question is..will the 1951-1952 swivel housing for a 5 hp. fit this 7.5 motor? Also..How to I remove the lower unit to remove this bent swivel housing? Finally..and I apologize for all these questions…what points does this engine take? Thank you! Please see pictures for any reference..the guy wanted $150.00 but I got it for 40.00 because of all the issues it has.
July 13, 2016 at 12:44 pm #40101My outboard catalog says I have a 1953 5 hp Elgin. I’ll try to find it
and take some photos and measurements of the swivel mount today.Prepare to be boarded!
July 13, 2016 at 12:51 pm #40102I wish I knew if the 5hp swivel housing was the same as the 7.5 or not. I have a 7.5 just like yours that I just acquired myself from another member. I also have a newer 2-tone 7.5 Elgin with a neutral clutch. The 5hp has to be very close but I cannot say if it is the same part or not. I’m not a big Elgin guy but I have a few of them and they are nice motors. We’ll built and good runners when in good tune. If I can find out if they share the same swivel housing I will let you know. If someone else knows, maybe they will chime in.
As far as the points go, it has been several years since I had the flywheel off of one of my Elgin and I do think remember exactly what the points look like. I have been working on lots of OMCs and got really used to looking at them. I know they are different but I’ll see what I can do to help you.
I had the LU off my two tone Elgin but it is a bit different than this one. I need to get into mine pretty soon so when I figure mine out I’ll let you know. I see you have that wonderful little chrome button on top to engage the starter and release to allow the rope to recoil. I have not had one of these before but my latest one has it. I have been told it can make a person cus 😮 . Anyway, I’ll see what I can do to help.

July 13, 2016 at 1:56 pm #40109One thing I can say about this style of Elgins. They did a nice job of designing with backwards compatibility in mind. Most of the newer ‘features’ from the later year motors can be easily retrofitted to the older ones. This means the parts compatibility is usually very good across the years. The sizes, I’m not yet sure about. All my Elgins are 7.5s.

I’ve got a 1955 7.5 parts motor hangin in the rafters in my dad’s garage.
If it would work we could work out some kind of deal. But I won’t get
over there for a couple days. I’ll have to check the condition of it but
I believe it’s clamped to the rafter.
Does anyone have a parts breakdown for these motors? I checked the
Elgin Outboards website [ http://www.elginoutboards.org/index.htm ]
but there is no breakdown of the transom clamps.Steve A W
