Before I took the subject motor apart, I tried the neutral clutch, and it
did not release the lower driveshaft when the lever was lifted.Upon taking it apart, I notice the end of the clutch spring was too
high for the dog to engage the spring. Upon further disassembly,
and inspection, I was able to get the clutch spring down further on
the drum, where the dog would engage it when the cable is pulled. While apart, I also noticed that the inner “shock spring” was sticking
out of the top of the clutch sleeve about 3/8″. I didn’t think that spring
with an “open end” should be ridding on the water pump base housing
and bronze bushing, so I compressed it back into the sleeve using
the vise.I got to wondering why both springs “rode up” too high. After I compress
the shock spring back in the sleeve flush, I notice that there would be about
3/8″ inch gap between the top of the clutch sleeve, and the bottom of the
water pump base housing bushing. If the driveshaft “rides up” that 3/8″
along with the clutch assembly, then I don’t think the clutch dog would be
able to engage the clutch spring.I started digging in the Johnson 10th Edition manual at the TN series
with the neutral clutch, and they are showing a “retainer”, part #302309
on the top side of the clutch sleeve.
I’m not sure if the GALE and JOHNSON motors with the neutral clutch,
of the same years, have all the same parts in the lower unit? Obviously,
the top of the motors, and what activates the clutch cable are different.Anyway, I’m wondering if I’m actually missing the retainer, or if my
Gale Buccaneer is designed a little different? Further to confuse the
mater, the lower unit is “green”, making me wonder if it has a TN
lower unit. That said, there’s hints of green all over this brown
Buccaneer, like it was “camoflauged” at one time 🙁Also, I’m wondering if anyone has any photos of said retainer, and even
better, measurements in case I decide to try to make one on the lathe.
Marine Engine shows they have some in stock, but no photos of the part.If I’m missing this part “for sure”, then I may have a Johnson TN left
that I can borrow some parts.Thanks.
This photo is after I got the clutch spring back “down” and in place, but
before I compressed the shock spring back into the sleeve. Is the spring
suppose to be sticking out?

January 24, 2022 at 8:16 pm #253373January 24, 2022 at 8:20 pm #253376Most parts are the same. Slightly different drive shaft diameter, thus different size parts that fit onto it (impeller).
EDIT: Sorry, that is in error. Actually, the Drive shaft diameter is the same in 5D1o and TN models. What I had i mind was the drive shaft diameters are different than the full shift 5.5 & 7.5 hp J/E. Ream a 5.5/7.5 impeller to fit the 5D1o and TN shafts.
January 24, 2022 at 9:06 pm #253379Thanks for the diagrams Frank! I’m glad you mention the differences in the driveshafts,
hence seals, etc., so I didn’t source any parts using TN numbers.I “think” I saved a TN for a future project, but I gave away quite
a few derelict TD’s and some TN’s at Tomahawk just to make room.
I’ll have to go a little search and rescue tomorrow and see if I can
find the missing retainer. Suppose to “feel like” -38 below tomorrow morning
with the wind chill, so I may wait until it only feels like -20 below!Prepare to be boarded!

A friend of mine has one of these.. It was given to him and
had obviously been neglected. He spent quite a bit of time
learning about it and getting what he needed to see if it
would run again. It finely did. The biggest challenge
being getting the gas tank cleaned out because of its design.
I didn’t know anything about them, He kept insisting I take
it and run it sum. I finely weakened and put it on my boat.
What a great motor for its size. It does everything well. I
was really impressed. Still having issues with dirt in the
tank in the video but he has overcome that problem now.
TubsJanuary 26, 2022 at 9:44 am #253440Tubs, I spent many hours behind the 5 hp’s little brother, the 3 hp Buccaneer,
of the same color, and era. It was my grandfathers motor. I wore out
the lower unit, but the prop still turns. I took it down from the rafters
a few years ago, and it fired right up, cracked coils and all.
I’ve been looking for a better lower unit, and hope to fix up the motor
nice while I can still enjoy another ride in the same lake as back in the 70’s.I like your “Auto Pilot” course correction “tool” in the video.

February 11, 2024 at 1:53 pm #284844can’t tell you how much this post helped me out!!!
February 11, 2024 at 4:45 pm #284847Years ago, I had a Gale/Monkey Wards 5D10 and a Johnson TN-XX. Runing the motors on the same boat, same day, same load, etc., the Gale would run circles around the Johnson, The Gale had just a tad more power and would get the boat up on plane whereas the Johnson just couldn’t quite get it up out of the hole. Your mileage may differ.
February 11, 2024 at 8:19 pm #284852I think it’s beautiful compaired to the new half plastic motors & will outlast them all. PLEASE male it pretty again!!
