I posted in the wrong place
I tested both coils and only get a reading between primary and secondary. Then when i put the clip on the plug output, i get nothing. Could i have been sold 2 bad ones?

February 14, 2024 at 2:16 pm #284930HV pins to either primary is ok if you get 4- 8kohms (use a scale above 0-10kohms if using a analog VOM)
if primaries between themselves => 0-1 ohm coils should be OK
otherwise the plug wire is open, baddly screwed in the HV screw pin or boot end spring is corroded .
in any event if not done you may as well insall new solid metallic plug wires no carbon high resistance stuff !

February 14, 2024 at 2:34 pm #284931Shouldn’t i get a reading from one of the leads to spark wire outlet? I have put on new wires as well

February 14, 2024 at 2:53 pm #284935So it looks like i bought 2 bad coils?
February 14, 2024 at 2:56 pm #284936where did you buy them amazon ?? local store ebay ??
does meter show 0 ohms when probes are shorted is it an analog meter or digital ??
analog ones have scales that must be set right

February 14, 2024 at 6:06 pm #284956if you meter works… if you can’t return for a refund and if they both test bad…. and you are testing them properly ….. well saddly you need 2 new (good ones) . imho anyway.

February 14, 2024 at 8:25 pm #284968Two bad (new) coils would be extremely rare. I don’t think you are testing them correctly. There are two wires coming out of the coil one above and one below the laminated core. The one below the laminations is the primary winding and goes to the points. The one above the laminations is ground for both primary and secondary windings and is grounded under one of the mounting screw heads. The spark plug wire (pin where it plugs in) is the secondary winding.
To test:
Connect your meter leads to the primary winding by touching one meter lead to the points wire and other meter lead to the ground wire. Should be about an Ohm.
Connect your meter leads to the secondary winding by touching one meter lead to the spark plug wire (or pin) and the other meter lead to the ground wire. Should be around 4 – 7 k-Ohms. Actual resistance varies with different mfr.
Very important: Your tests are useless if you haven’t set up your meter for the resistance range you expect to get.
