February 15, 2024 at 11:54 am #285019Took advice from both of you guys, then watched a couple of youtubes, doing exactly as you and the videos showed. Ordered new coils just now.
February 15, 2024 at 12:20 pm #285020jfyi….for some reason coil HV secondary windings seem to be increasing in the higher ohm range these days. Amazon stuff anyway.
Most of my recent ones were around 8kohms + whereas older one were lower in the 4-7 kohms range.
Can’t say they don’t work but I always preferred the lower range ones because I have this suspicion the new ones have smaller gauge wire causing resistance to increase but worse…. such fine wire is surely more delicate and could lead to insulation failure on the varnish. Time will tell I guess.
Smaller wire on the secondary allows cost cutting especially if they kept the same amount of turns. Magnetism is a strange thing … current #of turns.. ratios etc…
Unfortunately the only way to know would be a lobotomy/autopsy or accurate electrical testing HV voltage outputs to compare low and high end secondaries performance

February 15, 2024 at 1:34 pm #285021One other thing, recommended spark plugs for this engine?
<!–more–>February 15, 2024 at 2:11 pm #285024book says Champion J6-J if available or modern eqv.

February 15, 2024 at 2:13 pm #285025to service oldies you should get the bible…. just download for 20$ 400+ pages on all you need to know
what year did champion discontinue J6J spark plug | Antique Outboard Motor Club,Inc (aomci.org)

February 16, 2024 at 12:17 pm #285060I have downloaded it. Evinrude is not the same as Johnson although there is alot of crossover , somethings look different in the illustrations.
February 16, 2024 at 3:05 pm #285064agree there may be small difference ex: cowls but they are cousins of the same father 🙂
Unless you plan to crack one open for piston crankcase work I think you will find all you need to know. I printed mine double sided and spring bound with plastic cover sheets .

February 16, 2024 at 9:03 pm #285071Both coils arrived, one has a 5500 ohm reading, the other is 13,500
February 17, 2024 at 12:34 am #285078135000 sounds suspect…for reasons explained
in theory more resistance = longer thinner (if they matched turns) to theoretically generate a high voltage (GREAT !) .
Unfortunately that may increase the potential of punching the insulating varnish of smaller than a hair wires ( again…..if they matched the turn count ) and that is no fun miles out on the water 🙁
