I am deciding if this is going to be a project or just parts. I need a piston, piston rings, wrist pin and clip, and a connecting rod.

This is a Gale series 3D11 motor, mod# 35GG-9004B, ser# 522137. The part numbers are as follows:

piston 590-186, rings 550-314, wrist pin 550-315, clip 120-110, connecting rod 590-007. I have sent emails to marine engine.com, Sea Way Marine, Vintage Outboard, Mr Motor Classic Outboards, Laings Outboards and Crowley Marine.

Any other places to check that you could think of let me know. Thanks!!

Dave – I restored a 1957 Sea King 3hp which should be the same as your motor.   I was able to get the piston and rings on Ebay along with the water pump rotor and gearcase gasket and oil seal.   I posted the parts list for the Gale 3hp you asked for in another post – the part numbers listed there should be the same for your Sea King.   There are several current listings on Ebay for the 590186 piston.

            Hey BobW,

When you were restoring your ’57 Sea King 3hp, did you have a need to disassemble the lower unit into its 2 parts? The reason I ask is that I was considering doing that to get to the drive shaft seal that is in the bottom of the upper piece of this 2 piece lower unit. I’m not sure if it needs replacing but if I can it is a relatively cheap seal. I know there is a single screw towards the front off the lower piece that holds the two together, but I don’t know if these pieces really do come apart.

There is another, large screw/bushing that the drive shaft passes through.  They normally are very difficult to remove.  I am of the old let-it-leak school on that one.  Besides, the new seal is so cheap because it is a very poor design/quality.  I have started tooling up to improve it with a better seal.  A project that may never get completed (on bucket list).

Dave – I’ll second what Frank said.   I chose not to dismantle the lower unit into its 2 parts because I had heard that bushing/screw piece was problematic.   I’d leave it alone and just check the lower unit for any water leakage.  Lubriplate 105 in the gearcase will protect the gears even if you get some water intrusion.

Thanks guys. I sometimes get a bit ridicules when it comes to disassembly. If I can’t break it down into all it’s little parts I feel I’m not doing the complete job. That said, I am going to heed your advice and leave that bushing alone.

I could use some help on another matter. The prop shear pin. I don’t have one and I have no luck searching under the part Gale number 29-210, or in general with that number or 029210.

If ya’ll could point me in the right direction, or if you know that this has swapped to multiple different part numbers please clue me in.

As always, thanks for the help.

I buy different diameters of brass rod for shear pins,
then cut them to length as needed.

Chart attached. Looks like you need a #2 shear pin.
Should be another chart somewhere telling it’s dimensions!

Not sure what brand shear pins this list was for,
or who made it up, but perhaps it’s helpful.
