I am working on a nice 15hp Evinrude and having a problem with the carb. After cleaning the carb in my ultrasonic cleaner I reassembled it with the original steel needle and seat. Running it in the tank, it literally poured gas out on the starboard side, towards the top, level with where the low speed needle is. A suggestion was made that the needle was not seating properly . Took it off, cleaned it again, reassembled with a new needle and seat. In the tank again, still pours out under pressure. It appears that there should be a lead shot plugging the hole. It looks like there’s another hole near it for the vent.
If I am correct that it needs the lead plug (which I have). How do I install the lead shot?
      Thanks in advance.

In the first place, the fuel level should not be that high. Make sure the vent hole is not plugged.

Silly question, but float not upside down is it!? Is the float floating? Not catching on the gasket? Set correctly?

This should work – make sure the bowl gasket doesn’t catch on the float. . . 😉

How do you install #83? I believe that is the plug number. I have the lead ball. You can see the vent hole and the blind hole to be plugged facing you. My carb is not plugged. That is where the gas is coming from.

the float should block off any excess fuel at the rim of the carb bowl base junction….. if the inlet needle is working ok. that is why the float must be level when you flip the carb’s upper half upside down see pic. from garry

if the carb fills up to the top …enough to spew gas out….. the float/inlet needle assembly is not doing its job and you need to find out why before plugging anything.

think of it as a toilet bowl float valve… if it is overflowing it is not working right

I can’t tell you how to replace the #83 because I’ve never removed one. At least not that I can remember. But is certainly would seem it should be plugged.

So are you positive the bowl vent is open? If it is not, the fuel will rise and overflow. Whatever the cause, the fuel level should be below the main gasket, not way up there.

That passage goes straight to the bottom of the float bowl through the float bowl gasket. If the vent gets plugged, air trapped in the float bowl keeps the float from rising and any fuel pumped in goes past the high speed needle valve dribbles out the high speed nozzle and to the low speed needle valve through that passage. If that plug is missing, virtually everything pumped in will squirt out that hole.

have you done a blow test ?? air should not enter the carb bowl (body) when flipped upside down ….if the float and inlet needle are doing their job properly

with the carb right side up… air should enter the carb bowl (body) if you blow in the inlet
