Hello,
I have been looking for the same outboard I had as a child for years, and finally found one! It’s a lot smaller than I remember…..or maybe I’m a lot bigger hahaha.
As most of you in the hobby know, this is a 1955 / 1956 Elgin. From what I remember, from 40 years ago, they run pretty well, when they run. Sadly, this one does not, but that’s part of the fun, right? So, I know my way around OMC pretty well, and I have restored a few of them. This is my first Elgin…well, first in 40 years haha. I am going to need some help from the experts on here as this thing is going to need some work.
I just brought it home tonight and did a basic inspection. So, here goes with some questions:- Compression is 85 PSI on both cylinders. Seems a touch low, but is it too low? What is the spec?
- It only has spark on the bottom cylinder. I have see where people pull the coil off of the metal part of an OMC coil and press it on to the metal part of other coils….will that work on this Elgin?
- If it needs points and condensers, are they available?
- Probably going to need a water pump. Are those available? If so, I would really appreciate a link
- Probably going to need a carb clean. Are kits / gaskets available? Again, I would really appreciate a link
- The shift handle twists but it is really stiff. So stiff as a matter of fact that the handle itself is twisting around the shaft it is mounted to. Before I tear something up, could someone tell me how to remove the handle so I can figure out how to fix it to the shaft better? I think the rotational force lost at the handle is making the shift feel ‘sloppier’ than it really is.
- It’s rare to me, but is it rare enough to start a restoration ‘post’?
Ok, that’s a bunch of questions, and probably enough for day one.
Thank you all for taking the time to read this post and offer some help.

June 1, 2024 at 10:31 pm #288077I can only address your carb kit question. I believe that Elgin model has a Tillotson carburetor and you should be able to get a complete rebuild kit for it at Discount Marine Parts. Link: http://www.discount-marine-parts.com

My coils were okay, but if your coil laminates are the same size
as an OMC universal coil, it’s usually an easy job, but sometimes
you have to get creative with the plug wire routing, and looking
out for interference with the rotating parts.I’m not seeing what impeller I used on my 12 hp, but also not sure
if the 59 is the same as your older unit, but I believe it was a simple
swap for mine.I’m not sure I even had my tiller handle off, but perhaps you can
post some photos of your motor.
Here’s a photo of my tiller handle….

Houston, we have a problem……
Obviously, the coils are shot. I’m not nervous about an OMC coil / Elgin laminate swap—watched a you tube video, seems pretty straight forward. What I can’t figure out is how to get the coils off the mag plate. Are they riveted on there? What’s the best way to go about removal?

June 9, 2024 at 8:23 pm #288214don’t remove the cores. just the coils . if they give you a problem a hacksaw the coils and peel them off. works fine.

June 9, 2024 at 11:20 pm #288215I would just try o clean the points for ..starters but the condensers have surely gone South. .22uf should do

Are point and condensers available, if I need them?
Rob
June 10, 2024 at 7:37 am #288217condensers .22uf are everywhere very common … points maybe ebay ?? experts here will tell you but just clean them up and if not physically broken they may be good.
first is coils rebuild . !
inspect everything closely before spending $$$$$$ 🙂

June 10, 2024 at 10:09 am #288221As the original coils are still in there it’s a good indication the motor low hours. The points will likely just need some cleaning but the impeller will need to be replaced. Those look to be Wico coils. The lamination’s will require some major modification if where they pass through the coil is larger than 7/16″ on both sides. That style condenser is no longer available but there are creative solutions if you can get past these other 2 issues. As this motor has obviously been sitting for decades. Compression readings aren’t reliable as the rings may be stuck. Getting the motor running so today’s oil can clean and free them up often shows an increase in compression readings. Tubs

June 10, 2024 at 10:16 am #288222condenser wise you can always rebuild them by stuffing in a modern condenser … see this article and you should be able to rig up someting that will work .
