      I have RDE-17 parts list.
But I do not have parts list for RD-17
I would like to make a RD-17 into electric start.
Can I bolt on a ring gear to the flywheel that came with the RD-17.
Or do I have find a different flywheel.
I do not own the RD-17 yet. I am gathering info

The RD-17 (rope start) did not have a ring of any sort, so no you cannot bolt a ring gear on. That is assuming the RD has the original flywheel.

Also, you are going to have a bit of a search to find a starter mounting bracket for that RD. It is different than Evinrude and Gale because of the Johnson hood mount.

            Ok follow up question-
The part number for the ring gear of a RDE-17 is 203486
The part number for the ring gear of a RDS-20 is 203486
But both have different part numbers for the flywheel.
On the parts list (Marine Engine.com) for the RDS-20 it shows the type of flywheel that accommodates a generator.
The RDS-20 flywheel I own does NOT have the spot that accommodates a generator
            Drum roll
Can I use the RDS-20 flywheel which I own on a RD-17 to help make it electric start????????

You will also need a rewind housing with a wider footprint to clear the ring gear. The Johnson starter mount is rare. Many of us older collectors are tired of pulling on a rope and would rather just push a button.

                  Will a flywheel from a RDS-20 work on a RD-17 ?????????

The part number for a ring gear of a RDE-17 is 203486
                  Both are the same
The RDS-20 flywheel which I own does not have generator ribs

According to the quick reference chart, yes.. 580336, 580337 fit RDE-16 thru RDE-19C and RDS-20 thru RDS-21B. Note that they don’t include the rope start RD-17. That might be because of other things such as recoil starter clearance etc. That, I can’t answer.

BTW, the generator pulley always fell off those things. SNAFU design.

                        e-bay. That’s where I got mine anyway.
