1) How do you disconnect the neutral shift cable to remove the lower unit and allow access to the water pump impeller? Is it disconnected at the upper end pulled down or is there some other method. How about reinstallation?
2) p/n 10-22729, Screw, Drive Shaft Housing, Top. What does this screw look like? Material? Replacements do not seem to be available and making one is my only option.Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rex PerryJuly 14, 2020 at 11:31 am #208580Hello Rex and welcome! Tear down is pretty easy on your Mark 5. You need to unhook that cable and undo two bolts and it should slide right apart. Unless the drive shaft is rusted into the power head. Some times that happens. Putting it back together and doing your best to seal it up is a real problem with this motor. The cable runs through an aluminum tube and usually it goes in and out good, unless it is frayed out to much. When I put mine back together I turn the motor upside down in it’s stand. Aligning the aluminum tube and the drive shaft at the same time can be a bugger. Remember to grease the splines where they go into the power head, use cornhead , lubraplate or a “OO” grade grease in gear case, and drain the water out often. You will be hard pressed to get it sealed up good enough to keep the water out. (you can prove me wrong I been wrong before) I just finished mine this spring. Good running motors but those gear cases can soak up a bunch of dollars real quick.
Don’t know what screw you are referring too.

I did remove the shift cable which was the key to getting to the pump impeller. Once I disassembled the water pump and removed the old impeller I found that the anti-rotation tab on the bottom side of the upper pump cover had been bent down 90 degrees. This part should be replaced but does not appear to be available.
My plan is to try to use a little heat and straighten the tab. If that does not work and the tab breaks I will either reattach a replacement or make a whole new cover.
The rest of the engine seems to be in good condition.

Does the tab end of the spring go into the drive shaft housing or into the lower gear box?
This part was missing from my engine.

July 22, 2020 at 5:06 pm #209466When installed, is the tab on the clutch spring on the top or bottom? Attached marked photo shows tab on LH side of picture. Identified with arrow.
