OK, so the base gaskets are different? This same type of difference occurs on the smaller engines when comparing thermostat vs non thermostat models. It doesn’t make much sense to me. I would have thought that the non thermostat models would have a bit of a restriction “acting as a crude thermostat”, and that the thermostat models would be unrestricted. But, it seems to be just the opposite! So, by all means enlarge that inlet hole in the gasket.
One other thing to check for on these powerheads. There is a little coolant bleed hole underneath the powerhead that bleeds a little coolant from the water jacket to help keep the exhaust housing cool. These holes often get plugged up with carbon. So, please find that hole and make sure it is clear.
We all appreciate you taking the time and “risk” to experiment with this conversion. Just wish there was some way to mount those cylinder head cover mounts from the old head onto the thermostat head! Let us know if you need anything! Don

“I DID find a horizontal cooling water bleed off that is directed into the exhaust hsg, I’m thinking the hole is between 1/32-1/16″ in diameter. Like I say, the hole is horizontal, although I’m thinking it is probably angled down just a bit to help cool the exhaust hsg. The exhaust chamber is open into the forward area as well, so I’m guessing this bleed helps keep the forward area cool as well. It should be noted that I found this same bleed hole on an FD powerhead as well…”
(edit: pictures got rotated? Gonna try and fix that.)

August 17, 2024 at 4:48 pm #289915Thanks Steve! I will definitely check that out. I had no idea that a bleed hole existed in that location.

August 17, 2024 at 5:42 pm #289917Nice photos and explanations. Do you use Plastigauge to measure the bearing clearances?
I’m working on a 1958 Johnson 5.5 Hp (CD-15). It shattered a connecting rod and scored the crankshaft. If I find a replacement crank, IDK how to check that it meets specs. I’ve seen videos of folks using Plastigauge.
I wonder if oversize piston rings are available for your motor.

1958 Johnson 5.5 Hp, CD-15August 17, 2024 at 9:51 pm #289927Larry, I wasn’t planning on using plastigauge I’m just using the better of the two cranks. They did make oversized pistons for the qd 16 but the bosses could wallow out again over time which is why I wanted the upgraded pistons/rods from the qd 22 in hopes my kids never have to split the case again😉
If you haven’t I’d post a wanted to buy on this site. I’m sure someone here would have a good used one they could part with. I have been helped out many times by this great community.
