OK, that hole you are pointing out is in the cylinder head, so that is not the bleed hole I am referring to.  Steve kindly posted pictures of the hole I am talking about.  This hole just bleeds off a little water to help keep the exhaust housing cool, but it often gets plugged/blocked by carbon…

Thanks for confirming Fleetwin.  I checked both powerheads and fortunately those weep holes were open on both.  Attached is an update of work completed this weekend. I got the cases together performed a test fit, checked water flow and water exited well from the outlet and exhaust and bores were dry.  I then primed and painted, the cylinders were lightly honed, new rings installed and end gap confirmed in spec on both cylinders, as well as piston to wall clearance.  I returned the pistons to original bores.  The crank spins smoothly after bolt-up.  In addition, I lapped all gasket faces.  Once the anerobic sealant sets up I will finish build-up and hope to barrel test  this week and possibly hit the water this weekend. New gaskets are being used on buildup.

Larry, I wasn’t  planning on using  plastigauge  I’m just using the better of the two cranks.  They did make oversized pistons for the qd 16 but the bosses could wallow out again over time which is why I wanted the  upgraded pistons/rods from the qd 22 in hopes my kids never have to split the case again😉

If you haven’t I’d post a wanted to buy on this site. I’m sure someone here would have a good used one  they could part with.  I have been helped out many times by this great community.

You can’t use plastic gage on this engine because the rods have needle bearings.   The little 5.5hp has plain bearings, so plastic gage can be used, unfortunately there are no specs to go by for its use though

Well, she runs!!  Started on the 5th pull.  Obviously, I had the cylinders good and lubed up!!  Pumped water real good and head and exhaust were cool to the touch after about 5 minutes of running.  Seems to idle good, naturally needs some fine tuning on the boat.  Hopefully I can hit the lake this weekend for a real test.  Thanks to everyone for their help and advice on this one!!

Nice job – good to see the swap-out worked.

One final post.  I got this on the lake this past weekend for about an hour and it ran great.  It stayed cool the whole time and started 1st pull.  I kept varying the throttle for break in but did try a full speed run at the end of the hour and it Pushed my 12 foot 1962 StarCraft Super Duty along at about 13 MPH with me and my son, this boat is heavy and hard to plane off so I’m very happy with that.

This is one of my favorite models, love the 55 graphics and these engines really run nicely…
