Thanks for the continued help. More questions:
I’m missing one of these small springs from the recoil and I don’t see that as a separate item on the parts diagram. Any sources for that?
The recoil is stiff and doesn’t want to rewind the rope. Recommendations on disassembly and cleaning? I’m assuming I need to get the main spring out, clean and lightly oil it, then have to fight winding it back in? (I’ve done it on a few other kinds of motors)
Fuel tank shutoff valve seems to leak a bit around the stem even when closed. Fixes?
Also, figured I would post some pictures of the project as a whole. Barn fresh, washed and next to its big brother (your warning about them being addicting was too late, now I need the other sizes and a 3hp Sea Bee and Sea King…) . Last picture I’ve buffed and waxed the cowling, still need to do the leg and transom bracket.

Most of us get them from parts motors or from club members that sell parts.

Easy shade tree fix for the recoil: Dunk the whole thing in a pot of mineral spirits and pull the rope a few times. The spirits will soften or reactivate (or whatever the correct word is) the old grease and after evaporation will leave behind a fresh coating of lube on the moving parts.
Yeah, the pawl springs are still available at an extortion price. Most of us have a few stashed away somewhere. Try a local repair shop first.
Try tightening the packing nut on the fuel valve.
March 4, 2022 at 11:56 pm #255610Quick update, I got the new rotor from Brian, much better fit. Greased the lower unit and put it back together. Haven’t had time to try running it yet.
I did put the compression gauge on it tonight. I was showing 70psi after several pulls. Is that enough or is it a likely cause of my hard starting before now? I don’t know how accurate my gauge is, my only comparison is it reads 100psi on both cylinders of my 1991 Evinrude 9.9hp which I believe is fairly low hours.
What’s normal or good compression on one of these?
March 5, 2022 at 10:33 am #255624It should run at 70 psi. A better indication is whether it has been overheated. Probably half of them that I’ve found have been, due to that pump rotor swelling problem. Is the paint fried on the cylinder?

March 6, 2022 at 5:28 pm #255683If you still need that Impeller I have them they are $20 shipped. In your photo of impellers the one on the left is a johnson impeller. the one on the right is the correct impeller just swelled due to leakage. Brian Wilcox 810-79407485
March 8, 2022 at 11:06 pm #255802Brian, I got the new rotor in the mail from you last week. Thanks again. I will try to upload a video of the engine running soon.

March 8, 2022 at 11:17 pm #255804Here is a picture of the paint of the bottom of the cylinder. I know I let it get a little hot the first time I ran it when the rotor wasn’t working (got up to about 300-350 by the time I grabbed a non-contact thermometer, I promptly shut it down).
Motor is pumping water now. Don’t get any out the exhaust slits at idle, it is pouring out at the leg joint, not sure if it is supposed to do that. Ran it for about 10 minutes and it seemed to run okay although it sounded like it was missing or something when I revved it up. I think I need to get it on a boat for more tuning. It was still VERY hard to start and after I ran it a while I idled it too low and it kind of “sneezed” and pretty much refused to start after that. Video below in the daylight was the run from a few weeks ago (not cooling). Video in the dark was today with the pump working.
Any ideas on the hard starting?
