Decided to tear into this little Neptune today, as long
as I’m awaiting a Pony Motor coil for the 6 hp Neptune.
All there, except the broken off skeg.
Needs a lot of TLC. Main crank bushings are a little / lot
sloppy. According to the parts list, they were not a
replaceable item, but presume they would press out
if one were going to go to the trouble to make a new one.
I was kind of surprised to see that it had some kind of
crankcase seals. The parts manual calls them “packings”.
The top one almost looks like a mangled O-ring, but
have not dug it out yet.
I thought before I rang the Neptune parts guy doorbell,
I’d ask you fellows what you have done to replace these
seals / packings? O-rings, generic seal, etc?
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
March 22, 2019 at 5:29 pm #171797I have been using “Flax Packing” for many years when needed. Comes in a long piece in a small plastic bag. Can’t remember where I got it, but I think maybe it was from ACE hardware?

Lloyd, I pulled the top crankcase “packing” out, and it’s a thin, rubber only, flat
o-ring of sorts. I think a R-02 o-ring may work in it’s place. Believe the bottom one
is a different size, and haven’t pulled it apart yet.I’ve use the flax packing (valve stem) packing on prop shafts before.
I’ll have to look again and see if using that is an option.

Frank, I had the same idea last night, and was looking at these.
Will have to do some measuring on the crank seals to see if they’re a possibility.
Also, not sure if the drive shaft has the same type seals or not, but will investigate
before I order anything.
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!

Frank, I think you steered me to these when I was working on my RDE-17 Johnson.
The “O-ring Store” shows quad o-ring kits, but can’t tell if they have ridges.McMaster-Carr has them. Their #115 is close.
ID is .010 too small, OD is .005 too big.
Maybe it would work for the top crank seal. Bottom is close to the same size as
far as I can tell without destroying the old one, but a little different design
and part # than the top.Prepare to be boarded!
