I have a 1957 35 HP Johnson engine block that I’ve partially disassembled and I noticed that there is a small hairline crack on the block on the exhaust side where the exhaust cover mounts and extending to where the block mounts to the exhaust housing. If I push on the block at the crack I can see it flex differently – so it goes all the way though.

Since this crack is located where there are bolted gaskets which face most of this crack, and since since it’s on the exhaust side of things, I’m asking for advice if I should be concerned about this or not.

      I’ve attached pictures.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

      Thanks.

I think it will be ok. There may be a tiny bit of exhaust leak from the short section of the crack that is not covered by the gaskets. But you can have it welded and re-ground flat if it concerns you.
