1957 FDE11 carb question

      Working on a 1957 FDE-11. The parts manual shows a bushing, part number 303947. This bushing goes into the low speed opening in the carb. In this motor the bushing simply spins when I try to tighten the needle valve. It threads itself onto the needle valve pushing the washers out. Isn’t this thing supposed to be fixed in there? I applied some 847 to it and waited a couple of hours. Didn’t work. (Epoxy?) Is there a solution or do I look for another carb? Thanks in advance.

        Assemble it correctly and it will work. Pre-assemble everything on the needle, Bushing, packings, nut, etc.  Start the bushing onto the needle just a few threads.

        Now push the whole thing into the carb and tighten the packing nut just enough to prevent the bushing from spinning. Now you can proceed to lightly seat the needle and back it out for the preset.

        Once final adjustment is made and everybody is happy, tighten the packing nut enough to provide enough friction to hold it in place.

          Thanks for the secret solution. I’ll give it a try this morning. I tore down another carb from an FD 12 just in case but that bushing seems fixed (stuck?) inside. I won’t mess with it.

                WoW is right. Thanks Frank. And thanks to AOMCI. This information is not in the Red Book and I couldn’t find anyone who understood the problem. It took me a couple of tries but I remembered to be gentle with the turns. It worked. The motor started and idles down. Another 18 lives.

                  Cool!  I wish I understood the engineering rationale behind this strange design.  Cost savings?  Easier to produce?

                    I once had that figured out but right now the reason escapes me.
