Does anyone know where I can obtain a Bracket & Starter Motor for the Electric Start system in a 1957 Gale Buccaneer 25hp? And/or any Gale 25hp that had that option with the same block, I believe the electric start system is the same as the Evinrude/Johnson 35hp outboards at the time (Late 50s), and the 25hp Evinrudes from the early 50s. Thanks for any help.
September 6, 2024 at 6:01 pm #2905871957 Gale was a 6V starter and does not fit the 12V brackets used on J/E 35-40hp motors used 1957-up.

September 6, 2024 at 11:09 pm #290593Noted your comment Frank on the 1957 Gale 25hp electric starter being a 6 volt starter. I have a 1956 Gale 12hp and a 1957 Gale 12hp, to date saw horse queens, both have electric start, are these also 6 volt? Will using a 12 volt starting system damage the factory starters, i.e., shorten their life. Thanks in advance, Shell in Oregon, (Puget Sounders Chapter).

November 4, 2024 at 9:36 am #291902Michael, if you are a member you can check out my posts on Currant Projects. Big Big Twin and Big Twin two. I have been dealing with electric starters for the last six months. I find most of my parts from members or ebay.

November 6, 2024 at 11:41 am #291933Is there any harm if you just rarely and I mean rarely use a 12 volt battery to turn the 6 volt starter on these Buccaneer’s, I have an electric start 12 horsepower 1956 Buccaneer and also a 1957. These are mostly saw horse queens. I don’t want to damage the starters given how rare these Gale electric start models are. If 6 volts is needed does any one know of a good source? Thanks, Shell in Oregon.
November 6, 2024 at 1:14 pm #291937Scott, I have four motors around here with electric start. Three are using the 6volt starter and all are working fine. Maybe they will quit the next time out. Sometime we gotta live on the edge! The choice is yours!

November 6, 2024 at 5:54 pm #291944Agree with labrador-guy. I have used 6V starters with 12V battery a Lot. If your 6V starters work, and you are not boating on the ocean, I would just do it. There is also the possibility that a bracket from a similar but slightly newer motor would fit yours and be for a 12V starter.
