      Hello all,
I was hoping someone could help me find some information on a vintage outboard I acquired. The engine is a briggs and stratton and running the model number of the engine I was able to determine that it is a 1958, aluminum block 2.25 HP with oil bath filter. It is air cooled and has a copper tube midsection. I found OEM parts for the carb and it starts on the first pull but I have been unable to find anything on this setup. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I could be wrong but I think it is home made.

I was wondering if it was home brew but the milling is just too good and I think the gear case is cast.

the gear case is most likely from a production motor.

I also wondered if this could have been a prototype, well ahead of its time. The workmanship is very clean.

That is a great example of imagineering.

I’d say it’s definitely home built and yes, it is very nicely done. It makes me think about building one myself, but I probably wouldn’t spend the time doing it. The gearcase very well may be off of a factory production outboard and adapted to the rest of this handcrafted unit. The transom clamp or part of it may be from a production outboard as well. At any rate, it’s a neat piece!

Thanks all for the info, I guess there was a reason I couldn’t find anything on it! I wish I could have made it to the swap in Edgewood, md last week but it was a bit far.

That is a nice piece of workmanship. I don’t think you will find another one anywhere, at any time.

I don’t know if this will help but I re-did our family roto-tiller a few years back. I think my dad purchased the tiller in like 1972 I thought it looked old then lol. It has a 1958 Briggs on it. I found all the parts on ebay to rebuild the entire engine using NOS parts. I even found a NOS gas tank for the engine, gas lines, etc. It took a while every week I would search for the part numbers I still needed and eventually they would pop-up in someones auction. Their is a person on their that even makes new decals for the briggs engines.

I will say your muffler on your engine looks to be original. Must be a low hour motor?

                        Hope this helps,
                        Joe
