Don’t forget to check the seal on the shift rod – very common for it to get hard with age and leak. You can’t see it. It’s a fat O-ring under the brass shift rod bushing that’s pressed in. Part #0301877, or Sierra 18-7100-9. If you bought a gearcase seal kit, you should have this part.
DaveMarch 13, 2021 at 7:07 pm #233803OK, don’t mean to rain on your parade…I’m assuming the gear in the top photo is your forward gear…The teeth look a bit rounded when compared to the other gear…The reverse gear has nice squared edges…Maybe someone can post a picture of a decent forward gear…I will be home tomorrow and can have a look if you like….
March 13, 2021 at 7:47 pm #233804Out of a different model motor, but here’s what a new set of gears looks like. Fleetwin is right – that one gear looks like the teeth are much more worn than the other.

"Every time you remove a broken or seized bolt an angel gets his wings."March 14, 2021 at 8:13 am #233813It appears that one of your gears is missing a thrust washer. That would cause your problem.
March 14, 2021 at 10:18 am #233814Thanks for comment, that new chubby little seal went into its spot yesterday.
Thank you.
March 14, 2021 at 10:29 am #233815The thrust washer for the reverse gear was on the prop shaft when I took the photos. The area around the shear pin on the prop shaft was a bit raised and I had to tap the reverse gear off. Didn’t feel I needed to get tap the reverse gear thrust washer off, so I just cleaned it in place. So, there are thrust washers for both gears.
Thank you for your comment.
March 14, 2021 at 10:38 am #233818Enlarging the pictures does show definite wear of the thrust faces of the forward gear. Sure, it will work and drive the boat. For just how long is anybody’s guess. My guess is the new pinion will fail from running against those worn teeth, sooner later. I’m still amazed at how good it looks though, considering what it’s been through..

March 14, 2021 at 11:00 am #233823Your are correct.
Upon closer inspection under bright light and magnification there are couple of teeth that are damaged. I will get purchase a replacement.
Will be postponing the final assembly until the part arrives.
Thank you all for you comments and suggestions and taking the time to post the photos of the new gears and the other photos to point out the flaws in the one I currently have.
March 14, 2021 at 1:17 pm #233832The area of the prop shaft around the drive pin hole tends to expand and get mushroomed out a bit but it can be filed down carefully and polished so the bushing inside the reverse gear and the bearing carrier slide off the shaft easily. The area where the seal rides should be polished to. A strip of fine emery cloth will get the job done.

March 14, 2021 at 2:45 pm #233838Is is necessary to purchase a new bushing along with the replacement front gear. The one that was on there is smooth.
