Yea, I realize how bad my assumption of no water in the gear case might end up screwing me. I’m going to be busy this weekend, so i may not get to work on it for a few days, but besides trying to figure out why I have no spark, I will probably pull the entire lower unit off and open it up to start inspecting everything to see how good or bad it is.

September 16, 2022 at 12:58 pm #266136Joe thank you for that diagram. That is very helpful. I see it labels port and starboard and shows the plugs. That means when behind the motor looking at the heads, cylinder 1 and 2 are up top and 3 and 4 are at the bottom, with 1 and 3 starboard side and 2 and 4 at the port side correct? That diagram of the cap, is that looking at the cap from the rotor side or the plug wire side? Also can you tell me which side of the cap is up and which side is down? Some plug wires were off when I got to the motor, so I’d like to confirm the right wire is on the right plug as well.
Thank you all again very much.September 16, 2022 at 1:42 pm #266138I’d venture to guess that it is a 50012 that somebody has added a starter to. That’s ok, especially since you have a wiring diagram and enough knowledge to figure it out. The starter solenoid primary ground is completed by the safety switch when throttle is set at a slower speed. Firing order is 1-2-3-4, #1 being nearest the top, #2 next one down, opposite bank, #3 next down, first bank, etc

Feel free to let me know if anything looks out of place.
Thanks-

September 16, 2022 at 4:57 pm #266152Here’s a couple more of the other side and of that button that’s mounted on the back.
September 16, 2022 at 5:55 pm #266156Looking at the rear of the motor #1 is top right side( starboard) #3 below it. Look close at your distributor cap, the plug wire numbers are there, #1 wire is closest to the small primary terminal, 2 – 3- 4 around in a counter CW direction. Firing order 1, 2,3, 4. If you are buying parts for the mag, be careful to get the correct rotor. The rotor for the mag will interchange with the 12V distributor rotor, but they are not the same, the blade on the Mag rotor is wider and off-set a bit from centerline. You will see the “caution” in your shop manual.

September 16, 2022 at 6:06 pm #266157Jeff, it would really be good if you could hook-up with some club guys near you. Looking at the national register, I was surprised to see that there is not a local chapter in New Jersey, although the list shows about 50 members in NJ. It wouldn’t hurt to make a few phone calls to guys nearest to you, perhaps they can steer you to some “hands on ” help.

September 16, 2022 at 8:34 pm #266165Yep, that’s an authentic 50hp converted to electric start. Forgive my comment about being a 75hp magneto (it’s not). I had forgotten where the safety switch was located on the 50.
September 16, 2022 at 9:35 pm #266196One thing that we have not learned about this motor was its use history. Being on the coast, any chance that it was a salt water motor? If so, that normally does not bode well… internal corrosion etc
