It runs! Thank you guys for the help so far. I pulled the kill wire off the distributor and it started. It ran pretty well too.
If it was a salt motor, I cannot tell. My guess is it might have been. I’m not sure where the boat came from before the previous owner, I’ll have to give him an ask and see. My guess though is that it probably spent some time in the salt. I know the majority of places by me are salt water and if I end up using this motor, it will be used in salt water.
My next plan is to pull the lower unit and disassemble to see how everything looks. One last question, the case says hypoid oil. I know 75-90 gear oil is labeled hypoid oil. Is there a particular oil and weight I should use in the lower unit? Or is any hypoid gear oil good? And does anyone know what the capacity might be?
Thank you all,
Jeff
September 19, 2022 at 5:27 pm #266346Gear lube.. I use 85-90 GL4 . GL4 grade does not have the sulfur additives in GL5 grade that attack brass/ bronze parts. Now I don’t think ??? that your motor has any bronze parts, but I use the GL4 in all my sealed outboard gear cases. I know that Napa has the GL4 gear lube.

Actually, I think it does have bronze bushings in the fwd & rev gars and on the drive shaft.

September 19, 2022 at 7:41 pm #266352Joe and Frank, thank you guys. I actually had this discussion at work with another coworker a couple months ago. GL4 I believe has less sulfur and phosphorus additives and is better suited for bronze/brass whereas GL5 is meant for differential units not using any bronze/brass components which contains more ep additives.
If it calls for GL4 85-90 gear oil, I will go with that.
I removed the lower unit and disassembled today. I’ll show some pictures, but about a pint of gear lube came out, which was relatively clean and not milky. I inspected the gear set and bearings and everything looks pretty rust free. I have a new prop seal, prop seal carrier O ring, a new prop and nose cone, thrust seal, and the o ring and neoprene seal at the shift shaft. I will also replace the shaft seal above and below the water pump and the spaghetti seal for the gear case.
The water pump impeller felt soft and pliable and fit very tight into the impeller housing. Any reason I wouldn’t be able to re use it? The case and wear the plate are pretty clean and wear free.Thank you all again.
