This could be either spark or ignition related….Does this happen more on warm, humid days? Could be the infamous vapor lock…I might give a try running it with the cowls off and see if the situation gets any better, just as a test. Later Mercs similar to yours, have water-cooled fuel pumps. You’re not using winter blend gas, are you? Do you try pumping the primer bulb in the fuel line, when this happens? Vent on the fuel tank open? When it’s in fail-to-start mode, if you have a nice, quality, pump oil can full of pre-mix gas, you can squirt it directly into the carb opening and try to start right away. If it fires off briefly, it’s fuel related. I do this all the time without incident; but be sensible and have a fire extinguisher handy, JUST in case.
It might also be an ignition part, such as the coil in the distributor, failing when it heats up. If you have a spare distributor to try, I’d try that, too……
EDIT!!! Don’t drive with your wrap around cowl off, and then come off a plane and fill the lower cowl with water! You boat is a style that will probably do this!
Long live American manufacturing!
June 1, 2016 at 11:35 pm #37580Chris,
Did you get your issue solved? If not how about a little history on your motor? Has it been sitting for a while? When was the last time motor was gone completely thru?

June 2, 2016 at 2:17 pm #37608thanks so much for the help–I got it back in december, its susposed to be all matching boat, motor and trailer. I believe it had set up about a year, I live in south mississippi so i dont use any winterized fuel. I dont know if the motor has ever been gone though–it runs great on the driveway but i’ve never ran it more than 30 min like that–once its in the water,it will fire right up, ride a little bit, thottle down it stalls out
June 2, 2016 at 7:12 pm #37620Biggest difference between tank and lake testing is volume of fuel used. Is your primer bulb soft when she dies and would pumping the primer bulb help? A poor connection fuel hose to engine on my Mark58 gave me grief for a year until I finally figured out it wasn’t allowing full fuel flow.
June 2, 2016 at 7:30 pm #37621Is the water pump working properly? Do you know the last time the impeller was replaced? Is it possible it may be running too hot? I’m sure it isn’t running on the driveway with very much throttole. If it is on a garden hose, the hose pressure will mask a poorly functioning water pump. Just some thoughts.

June 6, 2016 at 7:11 pm #37789Ok-Here’s the latest–
Sunday-discovered the vent line on the magneto was off-reattached and added a ziptip, changed the plugs, top off the fuel, losen the gas cap
took the boat out and never stalled out but didnt run it more than 20 mins at a time
did notice that the fuel bulb doesnt stay super firm after it as ran
got back up,ran it and flush it out and notice no water coming out of upper outlet so that’s the next item to look atJune 6, 2016 at 9:03 pm #37793fuel bulb should not be firm while running. that is OK if you are talking about the exhaust snout on the leg it doed=s not need water coming out the water flows out the exhaust under the cav plate. just feel the exhaust cover on the block you should be able to hold your hand on it. check the gas cap and see if it vents.
June 6, 2016 at 9:20 pm #37794Ah – the old ‘I forgot to vent the fuel tank’ trick, been there – done that!
