I recently bought a 1960 Johnson 10hp that the owner replaced the spark plugs and couldn’t get it to run right and fiddled with it. After removing the flywheel the coils were cracked so I replaced them. Now with the engine running once I get to a lower speed it pops and dies. I noticed the throttle roller does not line up with the timing mark on the magneto plate. How do I adjust the throttle with the mark on the mag plate?
The throttle butterfly shaft should just barely begin to open when the roller aligns with the mark. To adjust, loosen the screw at the small end of the brass cam and move cam in or out as necessary.
Make sure your choke is not engaged when you are trying to sync that roller to the cam. It’s not that you will be able to sync it that way, it is just that you will not get those hours of your life back.
I’ll take a look. Next question and a rookie mistake. I routed the green wire wrong on one of the coils and the crankshaft wore thru the insulation. Is the coil shot or can I still save it?
If it just wore through the inulation, and not the wire, it is fine. Route correctly, then put liquid electric tape on it, heat shrink, etc…
When looking at the motor, the bolt on your right, by the widest part, will have the adjustment slot under it. Loosen that bolt, then you can pull the cam in and out to adjust, so that the carb butterfly just starts to open when the roller hits the hash mark.
