I have completely rebuilt this engine new rings, points , coils, spark plug wires, carb cleaned but will not start. any ideas where to begin troubleshooting ?
March 11, 2021 at 2:17 pm #233551Spark plug wires reversed or the points hooked up to the wrong coil? Pistons installed backwards?

March 11, 2021 at 2:33 pm #233554Pistons are installed correctly, double checked high side on intake and sloped side to exhaust. points are installed correctly to the coils, I have the shorter spark plug wire going to the top cylinder?? I have the carb. needle jets open 1 1/4 turns for initial starting . still puzzled??
March 11, 2021 at 3:24 pm #233563Time for some diagnostics. Start with the basics.
Spark
Fuel
Air
CompressionHave you checked for spark on both cylinders? Is fuel making it to the sparkplugs, or are they dry after cranking the motor?
The high speed needle starting point is roughly 3/4 turn, low speed is 1 1/4 turn.March 11, 2021 at 3:26 pm #233564Do you have spark? New points tend to have a film on them and they won’t start sparking with out a thorough cleaning.

March 11, 2021 at 4:00 pm #233581I just got done with a 1955 Evinrude 3HP ( basically same motor as yours) and I had to clean out the tank and fuel valve that were full of crap. And as AQuasonic stated the low speed ended up at about 1 1/4 turns out and the high speed was at about 3/4…the high speed is where I screwed up…I started at 1/4 and it wouldn’t keep running although it did start. Like Lab-guy said go back to basics…fuel to and thru carb, spark, compression.
March 11, 2021 at 7:55 pm #233624front coil feeds the top plug….
it is critical to provide answers to questions if you want to go forward….do you have the 2 plug firing yes no ? no fire no fishing !
have you serviced the carb including the top idle drip chamber yes no ? no fuel no fishing ! is fuel reaching the carb yes no ?
do you have compression ? how many PSI are you getting

March 11, 2021 at 7:57 pm #233625I’m still not convinced you have the plug wires on the right plugs…Did you change plug wires when you went through the ignition system? If so, just swap them and try it…If the wires were not changed, look for the “up” band on the top plug wire.
Will it fire at all, attempt to start, backfire??? Or, just seems dead when you crank it?
Try removing the plugs and squirting some fuel/oil mix directly into the cylinders, the crank it….March 11, 2021 at 9:52 pm #233644I will work step by step tomorrow
Thanks
MikeMarch 20, 2021 at 12:40 pm #234393guys,
I found problem number one – cheap coils made. in china -new coils = good spark both plugs
problem number two – low compression 18 psi both cylinders / not resolved yet, I replaced rings, honed cylinders , checked ring gap, installed rings correctly and pistons installed correctly. the head was cleaned, lapped, and bolt holes cleaned using a tap. I used a new head gasket and torque the head bolts to spec.
problem number three – carb jets are set at factory setting = low speed 1 1/4 turns open high speed 3/4 turn open. I had soaked , blew out all carb passages, new float and gasketscompression seems to be final challenge any thoughts?
