I’ve begun work on a boat, trailer and a 1960 Royal Scott 40 (unique motor). This motor has good compression and should stay on this boat (it’s cool). I get no spark and I’m not certain that my electrical tests are accurate. Does anyone have test instructions for this unique motor (involving – limit switch, selenium rectifier, ballast, upper primary coils, conducers, points and lower secondary coils)?? I’m getting crazy reading and I’m not sure why. Also, I would like to add two pictures (of the bout and of the motor) but “Error! The file is too big” (sized 13590kb & 6335kb – JPG)?? Please help me if you can. TY

I’ve worked on combines, tractors, trucks, cars, etc but never a crazy little outboard like this one. This 1960 Royal Scott 40 has me stumped. I’ve tested all of the components and get odd readings. One day the condensers test ok and the not. The rectifier gives odd readings as well. I believe that all 4 coils are ok but, I’ve never worked on a crazy little motor like this one. Does anyone have test instructions for this motor and rather than explain 20 different things through messaging?

          Headway,

Have you made any headway with your Scott?

          I just picked up a 1960 25hp.

Fiberglassics library has a few manuals for download, but I don’t think they go into the detail you describe.

I  would like to help too but without some kind of drawing i’m lost too. May I ask does your motor have a huge capacitor? I’s forcapacitor discharge type system. Frank do you have a drawing to post. I bet he does if not on a holiday. Try reducing your photos to post please. Your bridge retifier is a different sysyem than your magneto, it’s for charging only & a good chance it’s bad. Get a new bridge rectifier. Your mercury switches are for preventing over reving & swow speeds for shifting. I bet your capacitors for the points are failed too.Just need a pin hole in the  cap to not work, Please test everything disconnected from the mag to get true electrical values. Good luck!!

Chuck, it would help if you tell us a bit more about your 25 and whatever kind of trouble you are having.  I have the 1960 Scott service manual.

Thanks for asking about my motor.  I will be sure to start a new thread when I get rolling.

Here is a link to the manuals mentioned:  http://www.fiberglassics.com/library/index.php?title=Scott_Atwater

                All the best,
